Position Summary:
The Specimen Accessor is primarily responsible for the accurate preparation and handling of laboratory specimens for various departments or locations prior to analysis and testing. This role involves ensuring that specimens are correctly prepared, labeled, and documented for testing, as well as managing excess samples and resolving any issues with specimens that may arise. The Specimen Accessor plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the laboratory testing process by following established protocols and procedures to ensure accurate and timely results.
Essential Functions:
To perform effectively in this role, the candidate must fulfill the following duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Receive laboratory specimens and verify their accuracy against provided documentation to ensure correct processing.
- Ensure all specimen labels accurately match the information provided in the corresponding file to maintain proper identification and traceability.
- Inspect specimens for contamination or irregularities before preparing them for testing to ensure the quality and validity of results.
- Process specimens through various stages of analysis according to established protocols, ensuring precise and accurate information is obtained.
- Prepare and store excess specimen samples appropriately for future use or retesting as required.
- Accurately document each step of the specimen preparation and analysis process in accordance with laboratory standards and guidelines.
- Perform data entry tasks related to the input of patient specimen information into the laboratory's database system, maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
- Manage hazardous waste disposal in accordance with laboratory policies and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ensure proper storage of specimens in designated areas, following guidelines to maintain specimen integrity.
- Document and report any issues encountered during the specimen preparation process to the appropriate personnel to facilitate timely resolution.
- Efficiently manage container organization and labeling tasks to maintain an orderly workflow and prevent misidentification.
- Label and number specimens accurately and prepare aliquots as necessary for further testing or analysis.
- Print slides and other necessary documentation with the correct associated information for subsequent analysis.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance to ensure consistent workflow and support for laboratory operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to meet the evolving needs of the department.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2-3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory or related work environment is preferred.
- Proficient in the use of practice management software and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
