Senior Director, AI

As the Senior Director of AI, you will lead teams of researchers and engineers to develop advanced natural language technologies for multilingual writing and communication. You will drive innovation in areas such as paraphrasing, grammar checking, summarization, and translation, shaping the future of AI-powered language products.

You will set the vision for AI excellence, mentor technical leaders, and foster a culture of ambitious research and practical impact. Working closely with research and product leadership, you will define and execute a roadmap that advances both business goals and the AI field. Your expertise in NLP and machine learning will be essential in delivering transformative solutions that enhance user experiences and redefine language technology.

Responsibilities

  • Direct AI managers who lead teams of research engineers and computational linguists to design and build state-of-the-art solutions in natural language technologies, including paraphrasing, grammar checking, proofreading, summarization, and translation.
  • Devise and deliver novel solutions that improve users’ lives, drive the business forward, and transform the broader landscape of multilingual language products.
  • Invent novel methods that produce transformative outcomes, i.e., that cause a significant change in how users engage with the product or brand, how the team executes, or how the organization functions.
  • Create and maintain a culture of uncompromising pursuit of quality in AI solutions.
  • Identify gaps in team knowledge/practices and provide new processes and ideas to help AI managers solve novel research problems with greater impact and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with research and product leadership to form and flesh out the roadmap. Own the AI team’s goals and roadmap on a quarterly and annual basis. Distribute initiatives to teams to accomplish goals.
  • Shape multilingual language products through impactful decision making about the design and construction of natural language technologies.
  • Mentor team members to increase management skills, product knowledge, and technical domain expertise.

Ideal Candidate

  • PhD in computer science, natural language processing, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Record of publications at top venues in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and machine learning on par with that of a tenured professor at an R1 university, or equivalent evidence of transformative impact on relevant fields.
  • 8+ years of experience as a people manager of teams developing natural language processing technology.
  • Extensive experience designing, implementing, and optimizing solutions for natural language applications.
  • Ability to function as a principal-level AI individual contributor. 
  • Passion for writing, reading, and research. Deep understanding of writing and academic writing in particular.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Preferred: expertise in one or more of the following languages: German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese.

This role is eligible for hire in the United States.

The base pay for this position is dependent on multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed. You may also be eligible to participate in our bonus program and may be offered benefits, and other types of compensation.

$229,000 - $412,000 USD
