Infrastructure Engineer, Storage Infrastructure
ABOUT RETOOL
Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software: Gartner estimates that up to 50% of all code is written for internal use. This is the operational software for refunding orders, underwriting loans, onboarding employees, analyzing transactions, and providing customer support. But most companies don’t have adequate resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old and clunky internal software or, even worse, users still stuck in manual and spreadsheet flows.
At Retool, we’re on a mission to bring good software to everyone. We’re building a new type of development platform that combines the benefits of traditional software development with a drag-and-drop UI editor and AI, making it dramatically faster to build internal tools. We believe that the future of software development lies in abstracting away the tedious and repetitive tasks developers waste time on, while creating reusable components that act as a force multiplier for future developers and projects. The result is not just productivity, but good software by default. And that’s a mission worth striving for.
Today, our customers span from small startups building their first operational tools to Fortune 500 companies building mission-critical apps for thousands of users across their business. Interested in joining us? Let us know!
WHY WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
Retool is a fast-growing company with quickly evolving business needs. We’re looking to hire engineers to help us build out our storage ecosystem to serve the needs of our business today and for broader scale years from now. We're looking for someone who is ready to get their hands dirty, is motivated by having an impact on the business, and is constantly curious. This is the right role for someone who thrives while making sense of the blurry space at a high growth startup.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a member of the Core Infrastructure team, you will build and optimize foundational systems that power our databases, caching, and data storage architecture for reliability, security, performance, and scalability. Whether you prefer working across a broad scope or diving deep into specific areas, we offer opportunities for both. You will work cross-functionally, supporting the engineering, product, customer success, and sales functions to ensure Retool’s storage infrastructure is fast, efficient, and resilient.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU'LL:
- Scale Retool’s database and caching infrastructure to ensure high availability, low latency, and global performance
- Evolve our storage infrastructure to scale for both cloud and on-premise deployments
- Design and build systems, tooling, and automation to improve database performance, including query execution, indexing strategies, and efficient storage management
- Work collaboratively with backend engineers on data access patterns, ORM/DAO layers, and schema design to improve performance and maintainability
- Build and maintain observability and monitoring tools for our storage systems, ensuring visibility into performance bottlenecks
THE SKILLSET YOU'll BRING:
- Experience in scaling and optimizing relational databases (Postgres preferred) for high throughput and availability
- Strong understanding of query performance tuning, indexing strategies, vacuuming, connection pooling, and replication
- Experience with caching technologies such as Redis, Memcached, or CDN-based edge caching
- A pragmatic, problem-solving approach to balancing performance, reliability, and maintainability
- Strong organizational skills with high attention-to-detail and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to thrive in a high-energy, high-growth, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Willing to learn new skills and implement new technologies
BONUS POINTS:
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and managing cloud-based database services (RDS, Aurora, etc.)
- Prior experience in backend development with a focus on database-heavy applications
- Experience with observability and performance monitoring for databases (e.g., pg_stat_statements, slow query logging, Datadog, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry)
- Familiarity with TypeScript and Node.js backend development
