Brand & Marketing Designer

Middleburg, VA

Sandboxx is the leading platform dedicated to finding and building technology solutions throughout a service member's military life cycle. We're looking for people with drive and initiative who are excited about making great technology and a positive attitude for our service members.  Come help us build meaningful solutions for the military community!

About Sandboxx

Sandboxx is the industry-leading platform connecting military recruits with their support system through physical mail, in-app messaging, and a rapidly growing online community. Every week, tens of thousands of recruits send letters that forge unbreakable bonds with family and friends—and drive thousands of new users into our ecosystem.

About the Role

Our brand lives in every letter a recruit sends, every in-app experience, every marketing campaign, and every pixel in our community.

You’ll be the creative force behind it all—owning visual storytelling across email graphics, web graphics, presentation decks, layout design, our Figma-based design system and brand guidelines, mockups, and letter templates. Your work will ensure every asset, digital or print, feels unmistakably Sandboxx.

And this isn’t just “make it look pretty.” You’ll build and maintain the systems, templates, software, and guidelines that let our small team punch above its weight. Your work will shape how millions of military supporters, new service members and partners experience our brand.

Why We’re Hiring For This Role Now

  • We’re constantly rolling out new offerings, and need a single creative owner to weave them seamlessly into our look and feel across multiple devices
  • Our email and web channels have fallen out of sync—templates are outdated and assets are inconsistent, so it’s time for a full visual refresh
  • Our blog, website and in-app creative needs attention: they’ve been neglected and aren’t optimized for AI discovery or SEO, which means we’re missing out on organic growth
  • We want a true guardian of our brand—a designer who will build and maintain a living Figma library and clear guidelines so the rest of the team can crank out on-brand work without waiting in a queue
  • As we rebuild paid-social and drip campaigns, every graphic—from ad creatives to newsletter headers—must reflect our mission of connecting military families with precision and heart
  • We’re constantly hungry for fresh creative across every channel—emails, ads, social, letters—and we simply don’t have the bandwidth to produce it at the speed our business demands

What You’ll Do

  • Own all visual design for mail inserts, digital ads, social assets, email templates, sales decks, and event graphics—end to end.
  • Maintain and evolve our visual guidelines—typography, color, iconography—and enforce consistency across all materials.
  • Design in‑app UI assets and mockups including app splash screens, icons, illustrations, etc. that align with our mobile experience.
  • Create and maintain a living design system and template library so non-designers can execute on-brand assets without breaking the bank.
  • Partner with Marketing, Product, Ad Operations and Sandboxx News to produce on-brand infographics, explainers, and one-pagers that distill complex benefits into simple visuals.
  • Collaborate with Growth to A/B test ad creatives, track performance, and iterate quickly on what resonates with our audience.
  • Support the team by designing booth layouts, signage, and swag that leave a lasting impression on recruits and supporters.
  • Lead design for all merchandise and swag—apparel, stickers, mugs, lapel pins, and more—ensuring each item feels true to Sandboxx’s brand and mission.
  • Collaborate on slide decks and dashboards, ensuring visual clarity and engaging layouts for stakeholder reporting.
  • Lead and manage freelance relationships to scale output without sacrificing quality.

What We’re Looking For

  • A stickler for GREAT design—with obsessive attention to detail, pixel‑perfect execution, and a relentless drive for visual excellence
  • Strong project‑management skills and ability to juggle multiple deadlines
  • Excellent communication and collaborative mindset
  • Experience designing digital templates and UI assets for web and mobile

What Success Looks Like

Within the first month, you’ll

  • Audit every active design asset—identify inconsistencies, redundant file versions, and quick-win updates.
  • Deliver a basic Figma library for digital & print channels
  • Pitch a Digital Asset Management solution for all Sandboxx creative assets
  • Launch a refreshed email template suite with master templates and 7 campaign-specific templates (weekly training updates, holiday promotion, newsletter, etc.)
  • Develop and design new ad spec sheets and media kit with Ad Operations
  • Develop and implement a new Sandboxx News logo

Within the first 3 months, you’ll

  • Roll out a full-featured design system in Figma, complete with component guidelines, color palettes, and typography scales.
  • Partner with Growth Marketing to iterate on at least 5 ad creative tests, improving CTR by 15% and lowering improving ROAS by 10%.
  • You’ll develop a design request process and scale across each cross-functional team.

Within the first 6 months, you’ll

  • You’ll cut average design‐request turnaround time in half by leveraging your template library and streamlined processes.
  • You’ll partner with Lifecycle Marketing and/or Growth Marketing to A/B test at least five ad or email creatives, driving a 15% improvement in engagement metrics ( clicks or CTR).
  • You’ll expand the design system to cover new channels—blog graphics, Sandboxx news graphics & thumbnails, in-app banners, etc.—ensuring every touchpoint matches our brand’s look and feel

After 12 months, you’ll

  • You’ll have embedded a culture of brand ownership: 90% of design requests are handled against your templates and guidelines without manual intervention
  • You’ll see a measurable jump in brand consistency
  • You’ll have a fully-functional DAM, and people will use it in accordance with your guidelines
  • You’ll own an ongoing pipeline of fresh creative, from seasonal campaigns to quarterly refreshes, ensuring we never run low on new assets
  • You’ll have scaled merch beyond the pilot—our branded item sales will scale 20% YoY

What You’re Like

  • You’re a stickler for GREAT design—with obsessive attention to detail, pixel‑perfect execution, and a relentless drive for visual excellence
  • You’ve spent 7+ years designing for both print and digital—working at a SaaS, consumer brand, or agency where your work drove real business impact.
  • Figma (or Sketch) and Adobe Creative Suite are your daily playgrounds, and you know how to set up libraries, components, and version control.
  • You’ve built or maintained a design system before—creating reusable components, naming conventions, and documentation that teams actually follow.
  • You communicate clearly—whether you’re giving feedback in Figma, writing style guidelines, or presenting concepts to non-designers.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced, remote-first environment and can juggle multiple projects without letting quality slip.

Ideally, you

  • Have led the visual evolution of a brand at scale—rolling out a design system across email, in-app, web, print, and swag at a high-growth company
  • Are comfortable adding simple motion to your work—basic video editing or animation chops for social clips, email headers, or in-app promos
  • Know your way around merch production—selecting materials, working with vendors, and managing the end-to-end creation of apparel, stickers, and promo items
  • Have dabbled in HTML/CSS for email templates or microsites and understand the constraints of each channel
  • Have experience designing for direct-mail or print-on-demand, including bleed, die-lines, and vendor handoffs
  • Are proficient in Canva and can build on-brand templates that empower non-designers to iterate quickly
  • Know how to collaborate with growth marketers on ad creative A/B tests and read basic performance reports (CTR, CPM).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related discipline
  • Equivalent practical experience also considered—demonstrated skill matters more than credentials
  • Basic motion‑graphics skills (After Effects) for simple animations
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and handoff processes to front‑end teams
  • 3-5 years as a brand or marketing designer with a portfolio emphasizing layout‑driven work
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and Figma

Bonus Points For

  • Prior work with military, veteran, or family‑support organizations
  • Prior work with lifestyle, apparel, or veteran‑support brands
  • Agency management or freelancer management experience
  • Startup or high‑growth environment exposure

Compensation, Benefits & Perks

  • Equity incentive plan
  • 401k with matching and sharing
  • Top-tier health insurance and family benefits
  • Flexible paid vacation
  • Paid parental leave

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
