Engineering Manager, DevOps Tooling & Developer Experience

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team within our Infrastructure & Production group. DevOps Tooling & Developer Experience (Vulcan) spearheads our cloud developer experience, builds tools that build the tools and owns our big data platforms & pipelines.

We believe in automating our infrastructure as much as possible and pursuing challenging problems in a sustainable and repeatable way. Currently, our infrastructure processes petabytes of data every month through hundreds of servers and we are moving towards a Hybrid Cloud environment where we utilize the best of both worlds to build scalable production and development environments.

We work on many aspects of developer tooling at Smartly.io, from CI (we use GitHub Actions mostly) to our own development environment management tool (Devbox) that manages development environments for developers. We are helping other Smartly developers to be more effective in their day-to-day work.

As an Engineering Manager, you will be in charge of getting the best out of people, through coaching, 1:1s, helping them build a development plan and in general removing blockers from the team's path.

What You Will Do

• Lead an autonomous DevOps Tooling & Developer Experience (Vulcan) team. Lead by example.
• Lead developer tools development and strategy.
• Drive a cloud developer experience development.
• Facilitate the team at team level. Enable them.
• Care about your team members' growth and development. Go far together.
• Tackle ambitious technical problems and add your mark to our Engineering culture. Help us grow.

What We Are Looking For

• You are an experienced people leader with proven ability in building and leading high-performing teams
• You have experience throughout the full software life-cycle in an environment with multiple teams
• You have built and maintained large-scale, high-availability public cloud infrastructures with an active and growing user base
• You have experience in various agile development practices as well as the pragmatism to know which tradeoffs are acceptable and a sharp focus on delivery.
• Ability to deliver constructive feedback that leads to meaningful changes and growth.
• Empathetic and user-focused: you care deeply about the developer experience, you understand developers motivations and frustrations, and you genuinely want to help them
• You are a skilled engineer. You will need to be also hands-on when coaching the team members to new technical and professional heights, which can involve code reviews, pair programming, etc.
• Ability and willingness to work from our Helsinki office three days a week
