Sr. Manager, Product Design
Smartsheet is a tech company with a human story to tell. We’re here to empower teams to manage projects, automate workflows, and rapidly build new secure solutions, using simple no-code tools. We’re revolutionaries – so for us changing the way the world works is all in a day’s work.
At Smartsheet, our purpose is to empower everyone to achieve more. As a member of the User Experience team, you'll have the opportunity to shape the future of work, making our category-leading collaboration and work management platform intuitive, elegant, and future-forward.
As a Senior Manager of Product Design, you’ll lead a team of designers, researchers and partners to define and execute strategic initiatives that aim to evolve Smartsheet to an entirely new era of user experience. Your primary focus will be to drive and articulate a strategy for your area, and to lead your designers to deliver impeccable end-to-end flows with the next level of quality expected of our maturing UX organization. A strong mastery of leading from within the trenches, framing new perspectives, cross-functional partnership, and high-caliber craft are required in this role.
UX leaders at Smartsheet work within a pod team of product management, engineering, product design, ux research and content design. Given the sheer amount of change in our space and in technology at large, as well as the complexity and scale of uses applied with our product, the leader in this role will work with a fair amount of complexity and ambiguity. They will have the ability to impart great change and impact within the company, as well as with our customers, some of the largest organizations in the world. We’re looking for a courageous leader who’s not shy to explore and push for new horizons. This is not a pure management role, UX leaders at all levels up to VP at Smartsheet are expected to not only lead, but perform a player/coach role where they will actively work in Figma alongside designers and partners when needed.
You will report to a Director of Product Design, and you may work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
You Will:
- Establish, articulate, and drive a vision for the future User Experience at Smartsheet as part of a UX leadership team — evolving the Smartsheet product to the next-generation of elegant, intuitive, delightful end user experience
- Strategically identify and prioritize product areas most in need of UX alignment, and own driving discussion and action with stakeholders
- Manage the day-to-day activities of UX designers, making sure that human-centered design processes are planned, followed, and documented
- Lead in a supportive and inclusive manner — motivate the team to perform at a high level
- Own delivery of design deliverables, either hands-on or directing other designers - including narratives, flows, wireframes, mockups, prototypes and pitch decks
- Deliver modern, intuitive design by evaluating emerging methodologies
- Collaborate with product teams to launch new features and evolve existing ones based on an understanding of user needs, business objectives, roadmaps, and technical constraints
- Establish quality processes to ensure the design execution and engineering implementation are high quality, reflecting the design intent and positively impacting the lives of our users
- Participate as a thought leader across Smartsheet and within User Experience, playing a key role in shaping the culture of the UX and Product organization
- Test ideas and rapidly incorporate user feedback
- Work in Figma as a hands-on designer when needed for key initiatives or to support your designers and partners.
You Have:
- 7+ years experience leading UX or Product Design — possessing strong information architecture, interaction, and visual design skills
- 5+ years of people management
- Systems thinking experience—you understand downstream impacts of design decisions, know and can leverage industry-standard tools and methodologies, lead design strategy and execution on complex systems
- Experience collaborating with UX research partners — leading definition and guiding execution of studies in service of informing strategic direction
- Experience finding simple, innovative solutions for complex problems
- Experience with SDLC models that holistically incorporate user experience
- Expert in Figma and other UX and prototyping tools. Ability to create task flows, wireframes, prototypes and other interaction design deliverables
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills; ability to work successfully with teams and leaders across the company at every level of the organization including C-Suite
- Ability to articulate design decisions and advocate for the user at all levels of the organization
