Sr. Web UX Designer I (Remote Eligible - Costa Rica)

San Jose, CR

For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.

The Web UX Design team, part of Digital Demand Marketing, is looking for a Senior Web UX Designer to design engaging, valuable, and intuitive experiences for our website. You will represent the end user and evangelize human centered methodologies to ensure our designs meet people's needs, from first time visitors to seasoned customers. This role is design-focused, with a strong emphasis on translating ideas into buildable, well documented components for a fully asynchronous, globally distributed engineering team. You'll help maintain our Web design system components, and you'll see your work through from concept to launch, working hands-on with developers through Jira, redlines, and branch review rather than handing off a file and moving on. As a senior member of the team, you'll help raise the bar for craft and design system maturity with strategic and systems-level thinking. You're curious, receptive to feedback, and genuinely enjoy working closely with a team. Redlines, tickets, and following a project from end-to-end aren't a chore to you, they're where the design work actually comes to life.

You will report to our Director, Web UX Design in  the US. This role is eligible for remote work within Costa Rica. You  must reside in Costa Rica.

You Will:

  • Design user journeys, wireframes, and high fidelity prototypes for web pages and components, applying and extending our existing web design system rather than solving the same problem twice
  • Help boost design quality and system maturity by contributing components and patterns to our web design system, keeping documentation current for other designers and engineers to use
  • Prepare clear specifications, redlines, and handoff documentation that a fully asynchronous, globally distributed engineering team can build from without back and forth
  • Work directly in Jira alongside developers, tracking design tickets through to completion, and following up until each one ships
  • Review live branches and staging builds against design specs, flagging and helping resolve visual or functional mismatches before launch
  • Conduct user research in collaboration with our research lead
  • Design and build conversion-focused web pages on a staging branch in our CMS, ensuring brand consistency and adherence to best practices.
  • Use AI assisted and design-to-code tools to speed up handoff and reduce manual production work
  • Clearly communicate the rationale behind your design decisions to stakeholders, and incorporate feedback constructively
  • Collaborate with engineers, web authors, TPMs, and web strategists to ship polished, accessible experiences
  • Work with other departments to gain a deep understanding of user needs and goals and communicate them cross-functionally.
  • Be a self-sufficient problem solver that can navigate ambiguity while balancing a mix of projects of varying size and urgency, often with overlapping priority
  • Support other duties as assigned

You have:

  • 5+ years of experience designing web or product experiences, ideally within a CMS driven or component based environment
  • Experience preparing detailed specs and redlines for engineering handoff, particularly in an asynchronous or distributed team setting
  • Comfort working directly in Jira or a similar ticketing system alongside a development team, and following a ticket through to completion
  • Familiarity with design systems, tokens, and component libraries, and genuine interest in maintaining and extending one
  • Understanding of accessibility (WCAG) standards and how they apply to web design
  • Strong visual design skills, with an eye for detail and consistency
  • Applied understanding of core design principles: hierarchy, typography, color, and layout
  • Strong interaction design and prototyping skills
  • High degree of proficiency with Figma
  • Exposure to usability testing, user research, or working from research findings
  • Basic understanding of HTML and CSS, and curiosity about how designs get built
  • Experience leveraging AI tools in your daily design workflow
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a collaborative, team first approach with openness and resilience to feedback
  • Degree in Design or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • A portfolio that shows strong UI/UX craft

Nice to have:

  • Adobe design tools (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Experience with motion (Adobe After Effects, Lottie)
  • Familiarity with front end development concepts or a front end coding background
  • Experience with AI assisted and generative design tools, such as Figma Make, Lovable, or similar

Perks & Benefits:

  • Fully paid Health & Life insurance for full-time employees and family members
  • Monthly stipend to support your work and productivity
  • 12 days paid Vacation + Flexible Time Away Program
  • 20 weeks fully paid Maternity Leave
  • 12 weeks fully paid Paternity/Adoption Leave
  • Personal paid Volunteer Day to support our community
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development including access to LinkedIn Learning online courses
  • Company Funded Perks including a counseling membership and your own personal Smartsheet account
  • Teleworking options from any registered location in Costa Rica (role specific)
