Data Science Intern, Payments & Fraud - Master's or PhD 
United States, San Diego: this position must be performed hybrid out of the SIE-PlayStation San Diego, CA office. 

About the Team:
At Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the Payments & Fraud Data Science team is responsible for ensuring a seamless and secure experience for our customers. With millions of users worldwide and thousands of requests every second, our team is dedicated to detecting and preventing fraudulent activities at scale. This role offers a unique opportunity to grow in the data science and machine learning domains while working on impactful projects.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Develop and implement advanced algorithms to optimize our dunning strategy, helping to retain subscribers when their payment cycle expires.

  • Analyze and experiment with new payment methods to enhance customer flexibility and satisfaction.

  • Monitor and screen various events on our platform, such as account creation, logins, and purchases, to detect and prevent fraudulent activities.

  • Perform in-depth data analysis to extract insights and provide recommendations for improving payment and fraud detection systems.

  • Build and maintain machine learning models to predict and identify fraudulent behavior in real time.

  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and operations teams to implement data-driven solutions and enhance overall system security.

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program from an accredited institution, with an expected graduation date by Spring 2026.

  • Majoring in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, with a focus on Data Science or Machine Learning.

  • Interested in the payments and fraud industry.

  • Highly analytical with strong communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge of business models, objectives, and financial metrics used in decision-making.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL; knowledge of Java is a plus.

  • Experience in e-commerce or fraud detection is a plus.

Eligibility:

  • Able to work in a hybrid capacity out of the SIE-PlayStation San Diego, CA office during one of the following periods: May 19th - August 8th or June 17th - September 5th. 

  • Must be available for the entire 12-week internship period.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. 

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. 

 

Intern Pay Range

$45.75 - $45.75 USD
