Location: Hybrid – 2 days/week in office

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Associate Director of Teaching and Learning is responsible for the effective instructional delivery of SEO’s high school curriculum.  They are a visionary leader who can translate vision into practices, processes, systems, and protocols that support successful delivery of in-person and virtual instruction. This includes defining all instructional positions for each semester and recruiting and managing the performance of 80+ instructors. They also possess an exceptional ability to build and sustain community over time, balancing attention to logistics and details with a relationships-based approach. The position works closely with the National Director of Learning and Evaluation, Director of Math, and Assistant Director of English Language Arts to align pedagogical, instructional, and evaluative approaches. They are also a key liaison to SEO’s Human Resources department, ensuring that all hiring and placement systems and processes follow established protocols.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership & Program Execution

  • Lead, manage and support a team that includes two full-time Managers, 10+ part-time Lead Instructors and 40+ part-time ELA and math instructors
  • Support full-time managers in overseeing everyday managerial practices for part-time instructors
  • Oversee project management for all Teaching & Learning key responsibilities: hiring, management, and development of the instructional team
  • Set meaningful, outcomes-oriented department and individual performance goals
  • Conduct effective and collaborative department and 1:1 check-in meetings to keep all goals and initiatives on track
  • Identify needs and plan department development in both team and individual format
  • Co-own and manage the curriculum and instruction budget, ensuring expenses do not exceed budget
  • Lead the development of SEO’s instructional approach that aligns with SEO’s inclusive pedagogical approach
  • Manage and ensure effectiveness of Saturday, Summer and weekday academic programming
  • Collaborate with HS Scholars Program Management and Operations Teams to ensure effective program execution
  • Support programmatic calendar development and operations
  • Support San Francisco team in implementation of the instructional model
  • Engage in cross-site collaboration to support the development of protocols and practices for national expansion

 

Instructor Recruitment, Placement, and Development

  • Collaborate with People & Culture to engage in intentional instructor recruitment and revise hiring process as needed
  • Partner with HR to support and maintain an instructor compensation philosophy and sustainable hiring systems and processes
  • Support Senior Managers in overseeing the instructional hiring process each semester
  • Engage in instructor interviews and demo lessons as needed
  • Coordinate and design instructor orientation and professional development each semester
  • Facilitate orientation and professional development workshops as needed
  • Design and evaluate instructional coaching tools and practices
  • Oversee Lead Instructor processes including application, selection, coaching protocols, and meetings.
  • Define, codify, and continuously evaluate the instructional staffing structure, positions and model to best supports in-person and virtual instruction
  • In collaboration with HR, manage the recruitment and hiring process for all instructors each semester
  • Collaborate on survey and data collection tools with Research & Evaluation team including instructional coaching tools to analyze instructional effectiveness

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated passion for closing the opportunity gap on the high school and college level for first-generation and under-served students
  • Minimum Master’s degree in education, the humanities, or a related field
  • 4+ years of high school or middle school teaching experience
  • At least two years of experience coaching, leading or managing a successful instructional team
  • Recognizes and can fully articulate the ‘how’ of exceptional classroom teaching in both a live and remote environment
  • Highly innovative, collaborative, resourceful, solutions-oriented, and able to skillfully navigate changing priorities; ability to effectively manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously
  • Skilled at public speaking and navigating complex written and oral communication in a variety of settings
  • Experience designing and implementing systems and processes to manage complex logistical details

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Curriculum writing experience
  • Experience and facility with data collection, assessment, and analysis
  • Experience with recruitment
  • Non-profit management experience outside of a school setting is preferred

 WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard work hours are 10 AM-7PM, Tuesday – Friday and 8:30 AM – 5:00 pm on Saturdays when there is programming (typically 3 Saturday per month). During July and August, the work week is Monday-Friday.
  • This is an event-heavy position managing classes and trainings on a near daily basis throughout the year.
  • Work requires traveling to different physical locations for weekday and Saturday programming.
