Director, Product Communications
About This Role
Strava is the app for active people. With over 150 million athletes in more than 185 countries, Strava is where connection, motivation, and personal bests thrive. No matter your activity, gear, or goals, we help you find your crew, crush your milestones, and keep moving forward. Start your journey with Strava today.
Our mission is simple: to motivate people to live their best active lives. We believe in the power of movement to connect and drive people forward.
Strava is looking for a strategic and nimble Director of Product Communications to lead storytelling around our product roadmap, innovation, and athlete experience.
This role requires a sharp communicator with deep understanding of tech and consumer products, and the ability to guide both proactive and reactive narratives. You’ll work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Brand, Legal, Support, and Executive teams, and act as a trusted partner to company leadership.
We follow a flexible hybrid model that generally translates to around half your time on-site in our San Francisco office—roughly three days per week.
What You’ll Do:
- Own the narrative around Strava’s product innovation, helping athletes, and the world, understand how we’re shaping the future of movement.
- Be the voice of clarity and calm during high-stakes moments, leading crisis communications with confidence, care, and strategic foresight.
- Partner closely with product, brand, and executive leaders to translate technical updates into meaningful, human centric stories.
- Influence how millions of people experience, trust, and talk about the Strava product across the globe.
- Shape a growing, mission-driven brand at the intersection of tech, wellness, and community.
- Work with a passionate, purpose-driven team that believes movement is a force for good, and that great communication can move people, too.
You Will Be Successful Here By:
- Crafting clear, compelling narratives that connect our product roadmap to what matters most to athletes, and making sure those stories land with impact.
- Navigating sensitive moments with empathy and precision, acting as a steady, trusted voice during moments of uncertainty or public scrutiny.
- Building deep cross-functional partnerships to stay ahead of potential challenges and ensure alignment on messaging.
- Thinking globally, acting locally. You’ll understand the nuances of different markets and audiences, while ensuring that our messaging is cohesive and scalable.
- Leading with both strategy and execution, shifting easily between high-level planning and hands-on writing or media outreach.
- Staying athlete-obsessed. You’ll always keep the Strava community front and center, ensuring our communications reflect the authenticity, care, and energy they expect.
What You’ll Bring to the Team:
- You bring 10+ years of experience in communications, with deep expertise in both product PR and crisis communications, and you know how to balance storytelling with strategy.
- You’ve had proven success in consumer tech, digital media, or lifestyle platforms, and if you’re passionate about fitness or sport, that’s a big bonus.
- Your writing is sharp, your stories resonate, and you know how to build and maintain strong relationships with national and endemic media.
- When things get tough, you stay calm, think strategically under pressure, and navigate sensitive or high-profile issues with confidence and care.
- You’re comfortable partnering with executive leaders and collaborating across cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment.
- You’ve worked in a global or high-growth company, and you understand the nuances that come with scale.
- You already have a strong network of media contacts in tech, sports, wellness, and lifestyle.
- You bring a global mindset, whether through multilingual fluency or international communications experience.
- You’re familiar with Strava, our community, or the fitness tech space, and you get what motivates our athletes.
