The Banner is a Pulitzer Prize-winning, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to delivering high-quality journalism to communities across Maryland. Founded to reimagine the future of local news, we are building a vibrant, trustworthy, and sustainable organization that informs, connects, and empowers the communities we serve.
We’re expanding our coverage into Montgomery County and looking for passionate reporters who want to make a real difference through impactful local journalism. Our reporters cover a wide range of topics — from local government and education to culture, sports, business, and the arts — always with a commitment to stories that reflect the people and places of our region. We hold institutions accountable, highlight solutions, and help our audiences make sense of a complex and changing world — all grounded in truth.

What we’re looking for:
- Sharp reporting instincts and compelling storytelling skills — across platforms
- A deep passion for local journalism and a commitment to serving diverse and dynamic communities
- Curiosity, initiative, and an eye for original, underreported stories
- A proven ability to cultivate sources and produce enterprise work that resonates
- Comfort navigating digital platforms, social media, and engaging with audiences online
Job Requirements:
- 5+ years of reporting experience within a newsroom or journalistic setting
- Strong writing skills and the ability to explain complex topics clearly and accessibly
- A track record of balancing breaking news with deeper enterprise reporting
- Familiarity with audience analytics and how to shape stories for digital readers
- Collaborative spirit and openness to working closely with editors, photographers, and fellow reporters
- Willingness to work occasional nights or weekends as news demands
- Reliable transportation to cover stories across Montgomery County
- A firm commitment to journalistic ethics and standards
Additional Information:

- Knowledge of the area: Familiarity with Montgomery County and surrounding areas is a plus.
- Location: Roles will be based in Montgomery County, MD with hybrid work options available.
Salary Range: $60,000 - $150,000 Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We constantly review all teammate pay to ensure a great compensation package that is fair and equal across the board.
