Job brief:

The Weather Company is seeking an Applied Meteorological Scientist to join our Science and Forecasting Operations group in creating and operating our world-class weather forecasting technologies. In this role, you'll work with a team of scientists and software engineers to envision, implement, refine, and validate core elements of the company's weather technology portfolio and collaborate with cross-functional teams on their applications to diverse consumer and enterprise products. You'll analyze various weather datasets, formulate sophisticated hypotheses, conduct experiments, and develop pragmatic solutions to advance our weather analysis and forecasting capabilities using AI-based forecasts, numerical weather prediction data, and observational datasets. The impact you'll make:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of existing and novel forecasting technologies to improve weather forecast accuracy in a collaborative team environment.
  • Develop sophisticated hypotheses regarding understanding and improving the quality of our meteorological data and processes and test them in a scientifically sound manner.
  • Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve weather forecasting accuracy, automate quality control processes, extract meaningful insights from complex meteorological data, and communicate actionable information.
  • Acquire, maintain, and manage large-scale meteorological datasets, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility.
  • Analyze complex meteorological datasets using statistical, computational, and visualization techniques.
  • Present findings to internal teams and stakeholders, and occasionally to the broader company or clients, in a clear, concise, and comprehensible manner.
  • Provide expert consultation to internal and external stakeholders on weather and climate-related issues.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements in meteorological science and technology, including instruments, data, software, and methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain scientific code to support the mission using common programming tools and languages such as Python, MATLAB, C++, and shell scripting.
  • Participate in professional scientific exchange activities and conferences.
  • Participate in tactical planning and review functions such as Agile scrums.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for the long-term success of the team.
  • Passionately drive innovation in weather forecasting methodologies and technologies.

What you've accomplished:

  • Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience in applied meteorological research or technical positions, including in graduate or post-doc level work
  • Sophisticated understanding of meteorological, statistical, and data science principles
  • Demonstrated strong scientific programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C++, and similar languages
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing large and complex meteorological datasets
  • Familiarity with AI-based weather forecasting technologies
  • Proficiency working in Linux in an HPC and/or cloud environment
  • Excellence in synthesizing data and articulating results clearly
  • Proven ability to work independently on complex projects
  • Prior participation in professional organizations (e.g., AMS)
  • A track record of pragmatic, innovative solutions in operational meteorology
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team collaboration capabilities
