Manager, Engineering - Motion Control
About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team:
The Motion Control team plays a crucial role in ensuring our autonomous trucks operate exactly as intended. We translate high-level path planning into real-world control commands for steering, braking, and acceleration — balancing safety, precision, and comfort on every route. Our work sits right at the heart of the autonomy stack, where software meets vehicle dynamics.
We partner closely with multiple teams across Planning, Systems, Validation, Hardware, and Safety to ensure our control systems perform reliably across simulation, HIL platforms, and real trucks on the road.
About the Role:
We’re looking for a leader to guide and grow the Motion Control team as we scale. You won’t be expected to sit and write code. Still, you need to thoroughly understand the technical challenges, drive prioritization, and ensure your team delivers safe, validated software that performs in the real world.
This is a highly cross-functional leadership role. You’ll work across multiple disciplines to integrate control software into a safety-critical autonomy system while managing day-to-day team execution, delivery, and career development.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead a team of engineers focused on developing and validating vehicle control algorithms (lateral and longitudinal).
- Set direction, drive technical execution, and ensure timely delivery of validated production-ready control software.
- Guide your team through trade-offs, technical decisions, and cross-functional integration challenges.
- Partner closely with systems, planning, hardware, safety, and validation teams to ensure robust end-to-end system performance.
- Coach, mentor, and develop engineers to grow both technical capability and leadership depth.
- Build scalable processes that balance rigor, safety, and execution speed as we scale autonomy development.
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- 7+ years of professional experience in vehicle controls, embedded systems, or safety-critical software development.
- 5+ years of full-cycle people management experience
- Solid understanding of control theory, vehicle dynamics, real-time systems, and software validation processes.
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills with a proven ability to drive execution across teams.
- Ability to operate at a system-level perspective while leading cross-functional collaboration.
- Through knowledge and experience leading teams in Agile development processes.
Bonus Points:
- Experience bringing safety-critical control systems into production vehicles.
- Experience working with AUTOSAR-based software environments.
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 functional safety or ASPICE processes.
- Exposure to Infineon Aurix MCU platforms.
