This role is fully remote within the continental United States. A security clearance is not required but is a definite plus. Travel would generally be limited to one or two trips a year to our Arlington Virginia headquarters or other nearby offices.
What you will do:
You and your team will be responsible for deploying, securing, and monitoring our production, test, and development environments. Our environments are in AWS, with most of our applications running in Docker containers managed with Kubernetes. You are a great fit if you are experienced with Helm, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and/or other similar tools to manage and automate these types of deployments. Our primary datastore is Elastic, experience with either running it locally, or managing a hosted Elastic environment is a big plus.
Most of your day to day will be focused on engineering activities, with some time dedicated to overseeing the work of the rest of the DevOps team, managing your direct reports, and collaborating with our development teams, architects, and other leaders on system designs and strategic technical decisions. We currently have a deployment window that requires some evening work once a week, and an on-call rotation for 24x7 support. We prioritize system stability and are very successful in minimizing support calls.

What you will need (basic qualifications):
- Cloud Expertise: Practical experience in managing AWS accounts, and maintaining production applications in AWS is required, other major cloud service providers is a plus.
- Elastic/Database Experience: Our primary datastore for application data, application logs, and infrastructure logs is Elastic, significant working experience with it, and other databases is necessary.
- CI/CD and Tooling: Expert proficiency in CI/CD tooling and pipelines, with hands-on experience using tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and GitLab Pipelines.
- Containerization and Orchestration: Significant experience working with containerization technologies, particularly Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and EKS.
- Scalable Architecture Design: Proven experience designing and implementing scalable architectures in production environments.
- Automation and Configuration Management: Experience with tools like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet to streamline infrastructure management.
- Infrastructure Best Practices: Knowledge of best practices for infrastructure security, reliability, and fault tolerance.
- Cybersecurity Awareness: Familiarity with cybersecurity systems and principles to safeguard infrastructure and applications.
- Development Practices: Proficiency in software development practices, including version control (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and agile methodologies.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field or comparable experience.
Nice to haves (preferred):
- Proficiency in Scripting: Strong expertise in scripting languages, with a primary focus on Python.
- Web Frameworks: Hands-on experience with Python frameworks such as Django or FastAPI.

The projected salary range listed for this position is annualized. This is a general guideline and not a guarantee of salary. Salary is one component of our total compensation package and the specific salary offered is determined by various factors, including, but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, geographic location, as well as contract specific affordability and organizational requirements.
