About the role

The Assistant Controller will play a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy of financial records, implementing financial controls, and assisting in the preparation of reports for both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in accounting, financial reporting, financial analysis, and HEA/mortgage/banking industry operations. The Assistant Controller will also play a crucial role in maintaining financial integrity, overseeing accounting operations, and ensuring compliance within our organization. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the strategic financial direction of the company while supporting its growth and success.

What we're looking for

  • Financial Reporting: Assist in the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Month-end Close: Participate in the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring that all financial transactions are accurately recorded, reconciled, and consolidated.
  • General Ledger Management: Maintain and oversee the implementation and integrity of the general ledger, ensuring proper classification and coding of financial transactions.
  • Reconciliation: Perform regular reconciliations of various accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly.
  • Financial Controls: Assist in the development and implementation of financial controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Audit Support: Collaborate with external auditors during financial audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations to support the audit process.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Contribute to the budgeting and forecasting processes, analyzing trends and variances to support strategic financial planning.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously assess and enhance accounting processes and procedures to optimize efficiency, accuracy, and data integrity.
  • Tax Compliance: Assist with tax-related matters, including the preparation of tax filings and ensuring compliance with applicable tax regulations.
  • Mortgage-specific Financial Analysis: Utilize a deep understanding of mortgage industry dynamics to perform financial analyses, evaluate loan portfolios, and assess risk exposure.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the finance team, senior management, and cross-functional departments to provide financial insights and support business decisions.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with accounting standards, regulations, and industry best practices, and share knowledge with the finance team.

Minimum Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • Proven experience (5-10 years) in accounting or financial management, preferably within the HEA / mortgage or financial services industry.
  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in financial software and systems, including ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).  Netsuite experience including system implementation is a major plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, coupled with excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive mindset to address challenges and drive process improvements.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

$190,000 Actual base salary varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location.
