Make Wayve the experience that defines your career!

The role

In this pivotal role as Human Factors Engineer, you will take end-to-end ownership of shaping the human-centric aspects of Wayve’s autonomous driving stack. Your expertise will underpin our safety analysis, HMI design, and overall product and policy strategy by integrating state-of-the-art human perception, reaction, and user experience insights into every facet of our AV2.0 system. You will work closely with safety, policy, product, engineering, safety, and marketing teams to pioneer a new vision for how AI transforms the driving task, ensuring that our solutions are not only technically advanced but also inherently intuitive and trustworthy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Human Factors Strategy: Develop a human factors vision that underpins safety, regulatory compliance, policy influence, and product innovation within our autonomous driving stack.
  • Safety & Compliance Support: Leverage expertise in human perception and reaction time to establish and validate safety requirements. Create comprehensive strategies for Manual Revert Modes and driver takeover, including reaction time quantification and DMS requirements.
  • HMI & UX Innovation: Design attractive AV2.0-minded HMI interfaces that clearly communicate vehicle intentions while meeting regulatory standards (L2, L3). Research human-AI interaction to build trust and adaptive, intuitive interfaces, ensuring inclusivity for diverse driver demographics.
  • User Research & Data Analysis: Design and execute qualitative and quantitative user studies, including usability testing, to assess driver interactions with the AI system. Define KPIs for takeover performance, HMI effectiveness, and driver safety, and collaborate on real-world testing and data-driven refinement.
  • Regulatory and Market Advocacy: Work closely with our policy and marketing teams to build robust, evidence-based cases that support regulatory changes for advanced ADAS systems.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a subject matter expert and bridge between product, engineering, policy, and marketing, safety, ensuring that human factors insights are integrated into design, testing, and deployment.

About you

To excel as our Human Factors Engineer, you should bring a human-centred approach to innovation, seamlessly blending the desirable aspects of human behaviour with what is technologically feasible and economically viable for automakers.

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in human factors, with a proven track record in user research, experimental design, and data-driven insights within safety-critical or automotive environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying principles of human perception and reaction analysis to drive safety and usability in complex systems.
  • Strong background in UI/HMI design, capable of developing interfaces that effectively communicate vehicle intent and foster human-AI collaboration.
  • Experience working in entrepreneurial or iterative design settings, with the ability to balance methodological rigour with agile execution.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and presentation skills, enabling you to influence across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in human factors, human-computer interaction, cognitive science, psychology, or a related field.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in autonomous driving, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), or related automotive technologies.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards for L2/L3 systems, along with experience interfacing with OEMs and policy teams.
  • In particular familiarity with key automotive and human factors standards and regulations, including DCAS (R-171), ISO 9241-210, ISO 21448/ISO 22950, FMVSS, UNECE-R79, and GSR II. Understand how these standards guide HMI design—such as timely driver notifications of manoeuvres, clear visualisation of trajectories, lane boundaries, and critical warnings—while avoiding overly complex, cognitively demanding interfaces.
  • A portfolio demonstrating how your research and design have directly informed product strategies and enhanced user experiences.
  • Advanced skills in quantitative analysis, including proficiency in statistical tools and methodologies for experimental evaluation.
  • A forward-thinking mindset with a passion for innovating at the intersection of technology, safety, and user experience.
  • Join us at Wayve and help redefine the future of autonomous driving by ensuring our technology is as human-centric as it is innovative.

We understand that everyone has a unique set of skills and experiences and that not everyone will meet all of the requirements listed above. If you’re passionate about self-driving cars and think you have what it takes to make a positive impact on the world, we encourage you to apply.
