Write your story with a career at Zip
Join Zip’s AU Legal team and play an important role in helping our business develop products, partnerships and commercial solutions that deliver for our customers while navigating an evolving regulatory environment.
As Senior Legal Counsel, you’ll partner closely with Product, Commercial, Compliance, Engineering and other teams across Zip, providing pragmatic and solutions focused advice across existing products, new product development, commercial transactions, regulatory matters and strategic initiatives.
Supported by our General Counsel and other senior members of the Legal team, you’ll combine your legal expertise with commercial judgement to identify and manage risk, influence decisions and help teams move from idea to launch with confidence.
What you’ll own
- Partner with teams throughout the product development lifecycle, advising on product design, new features and launches and helping teams understand and address applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Provide practical advice across relevant Australian laws and regulations, including consumer credit, privacy and other regulatory frameworks relevant to Zip’s products and operations.
- Build trusted relationships with Product and Commercial teams, developing a strong understanding of their objectives and helping structure commercially sound solutions that can be effectively implemented.
- Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial arrangements, including strategic partnerships, merchant arrangements, marketing agreements, promotional terms and service provider agreements.
- Help translate legal and regulatory requirements into practical considerations for product design and commercial arrangements, supporting ongoing compliance once solutions are operationalised.
- Develop a deep understanding of Zip’s products, customers, commercial priorities and regulatory environment to provide advice that considers the bigger picture.
- Identify legal and regulatory risks early, communicate them clearly and constructively challenge where needed while helping stakeholders find practical paths forward.
- Partner with external law firms where specialist advice is required, ensuring external support is focused, effective and commercially valuable.
- Contribute your expertise to strategic initiatives across Zip, collaborating with colleagues across Legal, Compliance and the wider business to solve complex and interesting challenges.
What you’ll bring to the team
Zipsters work on a broad range of initiatives, and our skills and experiences all look a little different. What really matters to us is that you’re a great fit with our four Values, and have a desire to learn and grow.
So whether you meet some or all of the desirable attributes below, we’d still love to hear from you:
- 7 to 10 years of relevant legal experience gained within a leading law firm, an in house legal team, or a combination of both.
- Strong experience advising on Australian consumer credit and financial services regulation, including credit licensing requirements and associated regulatory and reporting obligations.
- Experience applying regulatory requirements to product development, launches and ongoing compliance.
- Strong commercial legal capability, with experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex commercial and transactional agreements.
- Experience within fintech, consumer finance or broader financial services.
- Commercial judgement and a solutions focused approach, with the ability to balance legal and regulatory considerations with practical business outcomes.
- Confidence working with senior and cross functional stakeholders, building trusted relationships and communicating complex legal concepts clearly.
- The judgement and confidence to raise risks and constructively challenge decisions while building alignment around a practical way forward.
- Strong organisation and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality advice in a fast paced environment.
- A proactive approach and willingness to take ownership, bringing solutions to the table rather than simply identifying problems.
- A mindset that embraces AI and new tools to adapt, learn and grow.
- An aptitude for identifying and managing risks. Whether you are a People Manager or an Individual Contributor, we are all leaders at Zip, therefore effective risk management is important to how we run our business and part of all our roles.
- Our values in your DNA. Customer First, Own It, Stronger Together and Change the Game.
