A Snapshot
Working closely with the global Tax team and the Finance team in Japan, you will make your mark in a number of ways with your positive attitude, ability to work independently and get things done in a dynamic environment. This is a greenfield opportunity to shape our approach to tax in Japan in a rapidly expanding business.
Your Day to Day
In this role, you will own the provision of Japan tax advisory and tax compliance services to the Group, while supporting broader regional tax initiatives. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading Japanese tax matters across corporate income tax, consumption tax, withholding tax, employment taxes, and transfer pricing;
- Advising the business on complex transactions, structuring, financing arrangements, and new investments relating to Japan;
- Providing technical analysis and practical recommendations on Japanese tax law developments and tax risks impacting the Group;
- Managing Japanese tax compliance obligations, including corporate tax returns, consumption tax filings, transfer pricing documentation, tax payments, and statutory reporting requirements;
- Managing Japan tax reporting processes, including tax provisioning, deferred tax analysis, and ETR review support;
- Managing relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and Japanese tax authorities, including support for tax audits, reviews, and enquiries;
- Supporting the Group’s tax governance framework and ensuring appropriate controls and processes are implemented for Japan;
- Supporting Pillar Two, Country-by-Country Reporting, and other international tax initiatives impacting the Japan business;
- Leading strategic tax projects in Japan, including process improvements, and automation initiatives; and
- Collaborating closely with regional and global tax teams to ensure consistency of tax positions and alignment with Group strategy.
Requirements
- 12+ years’ experience in Japanese tax advisory and/or tax compliance within a Big 4 accounting firm, law firm, multinational corporation, or combination thereof;
- Appropriate professional qualifications (Certified Public Tax Accountant (Zeirishi), CPA preferred);
- Fluent Japanese and strong business-level English communication skills, with the ability to actively participate in and lead discussions with internal and external stakeholders in both verbal and written settings;
- Experience managing Japanese tax audits and tax authority engagement;
- Demonstrated experience managing complex tax matters and working with senior stakeholders;
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance technical accuracy and practical business outcomes;
- Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment; and
- A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
