Job Summary

Atwell specializes in power generation and power delivery services including electrical high-voltage substations, switchyard, transmission line, distribution design, overhead & underground collection systems, and renewable energy power generation facilities such as Windfarms, PV/Solar farms, and BESS facilities.

The Electrical Engineer with emphasis in power sector will play a key role in supporting the project team with electrical analysis and design of various systems and components involved in Wind, Solar, BESS, Substation, and Transmission & Distribution Line projects. This position requires the individual to develop and demonstrate expertise in performing the core responsibilities outlined below.

Job Description

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles involved in the design of high-voltage electrical power systems for power generation, transmission, distribution, and substation-related projects.
  • Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills; must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work through effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, including substation physical, protection & control, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, collection system, studies, construction, procurement, and project management.
  • Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and internal teams, actively coordinating engineering and design activities across disciplines to ensure integration, compliance, and consistency throughout project execution.
  • Lead engineering efforts from project initiation to completion, working closely with drafters, designers, and engineers to develop, review, and finalize design drawings and packages.
  • Draft, review, and finalize a variety of technical documents including master deliverable lists, design criteria, engineering reports, specifications, bills of materials, proposals, feasibility studies, testing and commissioning plans, construction staging, outage plans, and scope of work documents.
  • Have a solid understanding of industry practices and standards such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, USDA and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Review internal and external designs for compliance with safety codes, client standards, constructability, and best design practices; conduct interdisciplinary reviews to ensure seamless coordination across all engineering disciplines.
  • Report workload status to the Project Manager (PM) and Discipline Manager (DM) regularly and complete assignments within the defined scope, schedule, and budget, while ensuring a high level of accuracy and adherence to Atwell’s quality standards.
  • Assist PMs in the development of proposal documents, technical scopes, and cost estimates for bids and change orders.
  • Proficiency in using standard tools including MS Office, Outlook, Teams, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is essential.
  • Ability to develop new custom design tools, manual calculation sheets, and report templates using Mathcad or Excel is required.
  • Occasional travel (less than 20%) may be required for site visits, field walkdowns, or client meetings.
  • Commitment to developing, promoting, and adhering to Atwell’s quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

PROTECTION & CONTROL

  • Develop high-quality drawing packages for substation P&C design such as one-lines, three-lines, DC schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, AC/DC service details, control enclosure layout/elevations, relay panel front layout/details/BOM, communication diagrams, and SCADA points list.
  • Experience with preparing major equipment specifications is preferred.
  • Conduct various engineering studies involved in the substation P&C design such as AC station service calcs, DC battery and charger sizing, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations.
  • Proficiency in using specialty software such as ETAP and SEL ACSELERATOR QuickSet is preferred.
  • Review substation material cutsheets and vendor shop drawings for major equipment such as power transformers, switchgears, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, control building, cable trenches, etc.
  • Ability to develop and optimize relay protection, control, and metering design based on best industry practices for utilities and renewable sector.
  • Proficiency in developing cable/conduit/trench plan and schedules and performing voltage drop and conduit fill calculations is required.
  • Proficiency in developing relay settings, protection device coordination, and arc flash is required.
  • Experience with SCADA system design, including PLC, HMI, and RTAC configuration and implementation is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical studies such as short circuit, load flow, insulation coordination is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE) is preferred.

ELECTRICAL STUDIES

  • Demonstrate strong understanding of electrical theory and concepts in performing studies such as: load flow & reactive power, short circuit, grounding, cable ampacity, energy loss, harmonics, protection coordination, arc flash, effective grounding, insulation coordination, induced voltages, and TOV/TRV is required.
  • Proficiency in using power system analysis software such as ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, CDEGS, PSS/E, PSCAD, PSLF, ASPEN One-liner, EMTP, SKM, TSAT, CYME, Power World, Windmil, or other equivalent software is strongly preferred.
  • Review utility interconnection studies and ensure compliance with interconnection and PPA requirements.
  • Ensure plant design compliance with applicable codes/standards and best industry practices.
  • Develop high-quality technical reports for documenting the process and results of the electrical studies performed.
  • Efficient and effective communicator with ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical project stakeholders.
  • Applies sound judgment in independently evaluating, selecting, and significantly adapting or modifying standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited)
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification required for Level III, preferred for Level I and II
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required for Level V, strongly preferred for Level IV

EXPERIENCE

  • Engineer I – Entry-level (0-2 years’ experience) - Previous internship experience
  • Engineer II – Junior level (3-4 years’ experience) - EIT Preferred
  • Engineer III – Mid level (5-6 years’ experience) - EIT Required
  • Engineer IV – Senior level (7-8 years’ experience) - PE Preferred
  • Engineer V – SME level (over 8 years’ experience) - PE License Required

Pay Range - $110,000 - $150,000
