About the Opportunity 

Start Date: March 3rd, 2025

Length of Fellowship: 10 months

Are you passionate about promoting public transit and inspiring others to embrace a car-free lifestyle? This exciting opportunity could be your gateway to making a real impact and playing an integral part in advancing sustainable transportation! This hybrid position offers the flexibility to work two days remotely and three days onsite each week.

The Capitol Corridor Marketing and Communications Fellow will work on projects that support integrated marketing, communications, service planning, and customer experience strategies while contributing to sustainability and climate change initiatives. 

This fellowship provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills in marketing, communications, customer experience, and service planning while gaining hands-on experience in the transportation sector. The Fellow will contribute to an intercity passenger rail system that supports the region’s trip and carbon reduction goals, learning valuable insights into the integration of sustainability in public transportation systems.

Some evening and weekend hours may be needed for event planning, content creation, or other activities, but they would be planned in advance.

About Our Partner: Capitol Corridor

As a vital transit service in the Northern California megaregion, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) plays an important role in sustainable travel. With an integrated network of train and bus services, the footprint of the Capitol Corridor extends as far south as Santa Barbara up to Humboldt, Reno, and South Lake Tahoe.

What You’ll Do

  • Update and maintain Capitol Corridor’s social media presence, including daily monitoring, posting, and providing input on creative content.
  • Provide graphic design support by creating digital and print marketing materials.
  • Develop content for news articles, blogs, and newsletters featuring destination highlights, service updates, promotional offers, and more.
  • Update the digital media library.
  • Conduct onboard and station site visits to assess customer experience and gather feedback.
  • Design, administer, and analyze online and in-person surveys to assess customer satisfaction and service needs.
  • Field customer care inquiries, resolve operational issues related to customer complaints, and collaborate with internal teams to implement solutions.
  • Support in-person and online customer engagement activities, such as events, webinars, and contests.
  • Provide partnership activation support through the creation and execution of promotional materials and activities.
  • Collaborate on sustainability-focused initiatives, such as projects aimed at reducing the organization’s carbon footprint or improving eco-friendly travel options.
  • Support operations in implementing rail safety initiatives in collaboration with California Operation Lifesaver, Union Pacific Railroad, and other local and regional partners.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong writing skills.
  • Some experience creating content for social media, and websites.
  • Graphic design experience is a plus. 
  • Interest in promotional partnership development.
  • Interest and willingness to travel to and explore where Capitol Corridor serves.
  • Interest in customer engagement both direct and indirect (customer comments, in-person events, improving customer experience).
  • Excel skills and quantitative skills to create or review marketing analytics reports.
  • A college degree is preferred but not required.
  • Coursework or related experience in environmental fields (e.g., internships, volunteer work) is preferred.
  • The ability to work on a hybrid basis (2 days per week remote and 3 days per week in-person).
  • A demonstrated commitment to addressing racism and advancing racial equity, both within team dynamics and programmatically.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship (SEI is unable to sponsor visas).
  • May require occasional moving about to accomplish tasks, moving from one worksite to another, or adjusting or moving objects under 25-50 pounds in all directions.
