About the Opportunity

Length of Fellowship: 10 months

Are you passionate about educating youth about sustainability initiatives? As a Resource Conservation Specialist in the Climate Corps Fellowship program, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to impactful sustainability initiatives with the Kent School District.

This is an on-site position with the expectation of onsite work 5 days per week. This position requires the employee to be physically located within commuting distance of the site location at the time of hire. Only candidates currently residing within commuting distance of the site address will be considered.

Kent School District is the fifth-largest school district in Washington state, supporting 44 schools and academies.  Their mission is to successfully prepare all students for their futures.  Managing resources provides the greatest impact for achieving that mission. As Facilities and resource managers, conservation is an opportunity to play a major role in their mission's success. Though Kent has all the tools, there is so much low-hanging fruit for making significant change. For a district this size, this contribution by the Resource Conservation Specialist will be equally significant.

What You’ll Do

  • Set up and maintain a resource use and cost accounting system to monitor, evaluate, and provide feedback on district utility costs and consumption.
  • Compile district utility service information.
  • Verify meters, accounts, and services.
  • Maintain information on district buildings, including square footage, building occupancy, and weather data.
  • Review utility invoices for abnormal use patterns, correct charges, and correct service types.
  • Work with district staff to investigate and correct abnormal use.
  • Coordinate billing adjustments with utility companies and track district savings resulting from billing errors.

What We’re Looking For

  • Knowledge of effective practices and measures to conserve utility resources.
  • Knowledge of appropriate environmental standards for schools and other facilities.
  • Knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and control systems.
  • Knowledge of utility resource cost and use accounting system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including making public presentations.
  • Ability to perform cost/benefit analyses and to interpret and analyze statistical information and trends.
  • Ability to operate a computer effectively and learn the use of specific software programs.
  • Ability to design and present effective presentations, including effective electronic audiovisual presentations.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Certification as a certified energy manager (CEM) is desirable.
  • Interacts daily with district administrators and staff, building operators, maintenance personnel, principals, building staff, and students.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting with occasional site visits.
  • Required to sit for prolonged periods and exposed to a computer monitor for prolonged periods.
  • May be required to climb ladders and crawl in tight spaces.
  • The ability to work onsite on a full-time basis.
  • A college degree, coursework, or related experience in environmental fields is preferred.
  • Commitment to a fair workplace that honors the experiences, voices, viewpoints, and values of all individuals.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship (SEI is unable to sponsor visas).
  • May require occasional moving about to accomplish tasks, moving from one worksite to another, or adjusting or moving objects under 25-50 pounds in all directions.
