Overview
The Medical Device/Simulation Research Nurse or Specialist for Data Collection will support high- and mid-level field testing and evaluation (T&E) of medical simulation technologies. This role involves developing medical scenarios, managing protocol and regulatory compliance, training personnel, conducting data collection, and coordinating field demonstrations. The individual will collaborate with Principal Investigators and local entities, supervise support staff, and deliver comprehensive reports on outcomes and findings.
Responsibilities
Protocol Development & Compliance
- Initiate research projects and assist in establishing satellite research sites.
- Interpret, develop, and maintain research protocols in coordination with PIs and staff.
- Track protocol submissions and approvals.
- Attend study meetings to stay current on research procedures and protocols.
- Provide required reports and documentation per protocol standards.
Training & Supervision
- Train medical research participants and data collection staff.
- Facilitate Data Collection Technicians and Medical Research Assistants.
Data Collection & Medical Simulation
- Develop, assess, and adapt medical scenarios tailored to evaluation needs and field environments.
- Coordinate with local entities to support simulations.
- Conduct and support data collection at various sites, including weekends.
- Set up data collection sensors and manage related computer systems.
- Evaluate simulations, personnel performance, and field assessments.
- Provide administrative support for data-related tasks.
Field Demonstrations & Evaluation
- Conduct concept demonstrations during training and evaluation periods.
- Schedule and execute study events in collaboration with PI.
- Host daily hotwash/after-action discussions with medics during evaluations.
- Document lessons learned, evaluation outcomes, and recommendations.
- Prepare and deliver comprehensive Field Evaluation After Action Reports.
Reporting & Communication
- Report to the MMSIV Division Chief or designee.
- Provide real-time updates during field events to Command and leadership.
- Generate and present research and evaluation reports as requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in Health Sciences, Nursing, Public Health or similar disciplines related to Medical Simulation with 5 – 7 years of relevant experience. 11 years of experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- 5+ years in clinical, medical, or field-based research.
- Experience with:
- Developing and managing IRB-approved protocols
- Human subjects research (especially in military, emergency, or simulation-based environments)
- Medical simulation development and execution
- Data collection tools and sensors (e.g., wearable sensors, physiological monitors)
- Supervising or training clinical or research staff
- Experience working with or within:
- Military or government research settings
- Academic medical centers
- Simulation training centers
- Strong understanding of research compliance (IRB processes, human subject protections, informed consent)
- Project coordination: Able to schedule, execute, and manage multi-site events and staff.
- Training & facilitation: Experience leading and coaching technical/clinical staff.
- Data collection & management: Familiar with managing electronic data capture systems and sensor hardware/software.
- Field work readiness: Comfortable working irregular hours, weekends, and in potentially austere or simulated field conditions.
- Technical aptitude: Able to troubleshoot and support computer systems and sensors.
- Medical literacy: Understanding of medical procedures, terminology, and prehospital care is a plus (especially in a simulation context).
- Strong communication and reporting skills: Written and verbal reporting to leadership and stakeholders.
Certifications (Nice to Have)
- CITI certification (human subjects research)
- Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) or SOCRA / ACRP certification
- BLS / ACLS certification (especially if involved in medical simulations)
- Simulation certification (e.g., CHSE – Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator)
- Military medical experience (e.g., as a medic or corpsman) could be highly valuable depending on context.
