About the Role:

Dr. Squatch’s P&C Team is seeking a highly motivated and organized Associate Director of Payroll, Benefits and Policy to join our team.  This role will have end-to-end ownership of benefits and policy management, overseeing the entire lifecycle from ideation and creation to implementation and enforcement. This position requires a deep understanding of employee benefits trends, analytical skills, and an ability to build relationships internally with stakeholders and externally with vendors.  Additionally, the Associate Director will manage the Payroll department, supervising a direct report in payroll operations.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of payroll processing using ADP and UKG, along with a comprehensive understanding of payroll compliance, including local, state, and federal filings. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, and a commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture.

This role will report to the Senior Director of People & Culture and Risk Management.

This is a full-time hybrid role with company benefits based out of Squatch HQ in Marina del Rey, CA, with regular scheduled trips to our manufacturing facility in Brea, CA.

The anticipated base compensation for this role will be $105,000 to $135,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and local market rates.

What you'll do:

Benefits Management

    • Lead the design, development, implementation, and administration of all employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, 401(k), and ancillary programs.
    • Make recommendations for funding structure for benefits programs (e.g., fully insured, self-insured, level-funded) to align with company goals while managing expenses effectively.
    • Conduct comprehensive analysis of all benefit programs and supplementary offerings; determine key cost drivers and emerging trends, make recommendations to senior leadership.
    • Manage relationships and communication with benefits brokers and vendors, focusing total rewards strategy
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state-mandated benefits, including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, CFRA, and ACA.
    • Stay up-to-date on changes in legislation and regulations, communicating and implementing required changes as necessary to maintain compliance.
    • Act as a cross-functional partner for compliance related to leaves of absence, ensuring that all relevant policies and procedures are followed.
    • Responsible for communicating benefit plans and offerings to national and global workforce 
    • Lead the annual open enrollment process, including configuration, communication strategies, and employee support, ensuring that employees are well-informed about their options.
    • Conduct regular benchmarking studies to ensure our benefits programs remain competitive and aligned with industry best practices, considering both employee needs and financial implications.

Payroll Management

    • Oversee ADP and UKG payroll processing and reporting.
    • Monitor compliance with payroll regulations and manage local, state, and federal payroll filings, implementing necessary changes in response to regulatory updates.

Company-wide Policy Development

    • Develop, review, and update company policies to ensure alignment with business objectives, federal and state requirements, and best practices.
    • Monitor and enforce compliance with established policies, ensuring that all employees understand and adhere to them.
    • Communicate policy changes and updates to employees effectively, ensuring understanding and compliance.
    • Maintain the People & Culture policy repository in partnership with the broader P&C organization and Legal department.
    • Provide guidance to managers and employees on the interpretation and application of company policies.
    • Stay current on trends and best practices in policy development, administration, monitoring, and enforcement.
    • T&E policy enforcement 

General Responsibilities

    • Lead regular and proactive audits on employee files for accuracy and updates.
    • Prepare reports and presentations for P&C leadership and key stakeholders.
    • Support the P&C Team with employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate team members.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

About You:

  • 7+ years of experience in Human Resources, Payroll and Benefits Administration, or a similar role required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • HR and/or benefits certification is preferred (i.e., PHR, SHRM-CP, CEBS, or similar).
  • Strategic professional capable of advising on corporate direction related to employee benefits and payroll, with a focus on compliance and effective policy management.
  • Prior experience with a professional employer organization (PEO) is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to succinctly present 
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to interpret data and provide actionable insights.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll compliance and processes, including familiarity with ADP and UKG systems.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A passion for health and wellness, personal care, and/or high-growth consumer products industries is a plus.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • A positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a good sense of humor are essential.
