Senior Software Engineer (Elixir) - Live & Collect
About Us
About the Team
Fanatics Collectibles is redefining the future of collecting by combining technology, live commerce and community to create the world's most engaging collectibles platform.
As part of the wider Fanatics ecosystem, we power experiences for millions of sports fans and collectors across a portfolio that includes Topps, Fanatics Collect and Fanatics Live, alongside exclusive partnerships with some of the world's biggest sports leagues, entertainment brands and athletes—including MLB, UEFA, Formula 1, Disney, Marvel and, most recently, David Beckham.
Our platforms power everything from buying and selling collectibles to live shopping, creator-led breaks and real-time marketplace experiences. Behind every experience are highly scalable, distributed systems designed to support global audiences, low-latency interactions and millions of transactions.
Role Summary
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help evolve the backend platform powering Fanatics Collect and Fanatics Live.
You'll design and build distributed systems that enable real-time commerce, live shopping experiences and global transactions for our collectors.
Working at the heart of our Engineering organisation, you'll own business-critical backend services that support expansion, acquisition integration and the shared transaction infrastructure used across Fanatics Collectibles products.
This is a highly technical role where you'll solve complex distributed systems challenges, building resilient, event-driven services that deliver high throughput, low latency and exceptional reliability at global scale.
What You'll Actually Work On
- Designing and scaling highly available distributed systems serving millions of users
- Building resilient, event-driven backend services powering real-time commerce and live experiences
- Designing and evolving our shared transaction, payments and ledger platform across multiple products
- Scaling multi-currency, cross-border payment and settlement systems
- Building high-performance APIs powering web, mobile and creator experiences
- Integrating newly acquired platforms into the wider Fanatics ecosystem
- Solving complex challenges around reconciliation, fraud prevention, refunds, payment orchestration and financial accuracy
- Improving platform observability, reliability, resilience and fault tolerance
- Supporting international expansion through region-specific compliance, taxation and localisation requirements
- Optimising backend services for high throughput, low latency and horizontal scalability
Key Responsibilities
- Own critical backend services within a high-scale, distributed platform
- Design resilient microservices and event-driven architectures
- Drive architectural decisions across platform and transaction systems
- Build systems that prioritise reliability, scalability and operational excellence
- Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards across the team
- Partner closely with Product, Frontend, Mobile and Platform Engineering teams
- Collaborate across Fanatics Collect and Fanatics Live to deliver seamless collector experiences
- Remain highly hands-on, designing and implementing business-critical backend systems
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of backend software engineering experience
- Strong experience building distributed systems at scale
- Experience designing resilient APIs and microservice architectures
- Deep understanding of concurrency, asynchronous processing and event-driven systems
- Experience building high-throughput, low-latency backend services
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures and modern backend infrastructure
- Experience designing observable, resilient and fault-tolerant systems
- Comfortable making architectural decisions in fast-moving environments
We build much of our platform in Elixir, taking advantage of its strengths for highly concurrent, distributed systems. Experience with Elixir is a bonus—not a requirement. If you've built scalable backend systems in Java, Kotlin, Go, Node.js or Python and enjoy learning new technologies, we'd love to hear from you.
You'll thrive if you enjoy solving difficult distributed systems problems, taking ownership of platform architecture and building technology that operates at truly global scale.
The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
