HSE Manager
Why Join Giga
- The Pace: We're building at a speed most companies talk about but never actually operate at. If you've been bored somewhere else, you won't be here.
- The Impact: Every person at Giga touches the work that matters. No layers, no waiting for approval chains. You'll see your fingerprints on what we ship.
- The Team: A team of operators defining the future of AI infrastructure. We recruit A-players from the most innovative companies in the world, and they choose Giga because the work here means more.
- The Moment: AI doesn't run without power, and that's us. Giga is the picks and shovels behind the AI revolution. This industry is about to explode, and you'll be in the room where it's already happening.
What You'll Do
As Giga's HSE Manager embedded on the Project Development team, you will own the health, safety, and environmental program for our data center construction sites. You're the person who keeps our teams safe while we build at an unprecedented pace — and you understand that safety and speed are not in conflict when the program is built right. You'll develop site-specific safety plans, lead compliance efforts, and build a culture where every worker on site goes home the same way they arrived. This is a hands-on, site-facing role that requires presence, authority, and a genuine passion for protecting people. You'll work directly alongside Construction Managers, subcontractors, and project leadership to embed safety into the way we build — not as an afterthought, but as a competitive advantage.
Where You'll Work
We are an in-office culture — velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.
That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive site-specific Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) plans for data center construction projects.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and audits; identify hazards, issue corrective actions, and verify resolution in a timely manner.
- Lead site safety orientations and ongoing safety training for all workers, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Investigate all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions; prepare detailed reports with root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable local/state environmental regulations across all active construction sites.
- Maintain all required HSE documentation including permits, inspection logs, MSDS/SDS records, and incident reports.
- Manage environmental compliance activities including stormwater management (SWPPP), spill prevention, waste disposal, and air quality monitoring.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies during site inspections or audits.
- Partner with Construction Managers and subcontractors to embed safety requirements into daily scheduling and operations.
- Review and approve subcontractor safety plans to ensure compliance with HSE policies and project-specific requirements prior to mobilization.
- Track and report HSE KPIs (TRIR, LTIR, near-miss rates) to project leadership on a regular cadence.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in a Health, Safety, and Environmental role on active construction sites.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (minimum); OSHA 500 or CSP preferred.
- Direct experience managing HSE compliance on large-scale commercial, industrial, or civil construction projects.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction safety standards and applicable EPA environmental regulations.
- Experience developing site-specific safety plans, JSAs, and emergency response plans from scratch.
- Demonstrated ability to lead incident investigations and produce actionable root cause analysis reports.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence behavior across a diverse workforce.
Bonus Points
- Prior HSE experience on data center, hyperscale, or mission-critical facility construction projects.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) designation.
- Experience managing SWPPP and environmental permitting for large ground-up construction sites.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly valued for field communication.
- Familiarity with Procore, Intelex, or other safety management platforms.
Benefits
- Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
- Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
- 401(k) with 4% employer match
- Unlimited PTO
- Paternity Leave
- Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Commuter benefits
- Monthly team on-sites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
Who We Hire
We don't use "A-player" loosely. Here's what it actually means at Giga:
Antifragile. You don't just survive chaos, you get better because of it. When things break, change, or move sideways, you don't freeze. You adapt faster than the problem evolves.
High Agency. You don't wait to be told what to do. You see the gap, you fill it. If something is blocking progress, you find a way around it, over it, or through it without asking for permission.
Executors. Ideas are cheap. We hire people who ship. You're the person who turns a whiteboard sketch into something real while everyone else is still scheduling the next meeting about it.
Bias to Action. Perfect is the enemy of done. You'd rather make a decision with 80% of the information and course correct than sit around waiting for 100% that never comes.
Speed. We move fast because the opportunity demands it. You're not reckless, but you understand that in this industry, the team that moves fastest wins. And you like winning.
