Communications Specialist – Contract
GovTech Barbados is a government-owned company established to improve how people experience public services in Barbados. We work in small, multidisciplinary teams to design and deliver digital services that are simple, clear, and user-centred.
We are building a modern digital capability inside government. This includes new ways of working and a strong focus on clarity, openness, and communication.
About the role
We are looking for a Communications Specialist to help our teams communicate openly about what they are doing and what they are learning.
This is a hands-on role embedded in delivery. You will work day-to-day with product managers, designers, researchers, engineers, and delivery managers to help them share their work clearly and consistently.
You will do some writing yourself, but a big part of the role is making it easier for others to communicate. This means coaching, editing, creating templates and prompts, and removing the friction that stops busy teams from sharing their work.
You will help teams show their work, not just describe it. This includes blogs, weeknotes, screenshots, short videos, and demos that make progress visible and understandable.
This is not a press or marketing role. You will be focused on working in the open, building trust through honest communication, and helping government stakeholders understand what digital transformation looks like in practice.
What you'll be doing
● Working closely with delivery teams to understand what they are building, testing, and learning
● Identifying stories, insights, and moments worth sharing publicly
● Drafting clear, engaging content including blogs, weeknotes, updates, and case studies
● Making it easier for team members to communicate by providing templates, prompts, and light-touch editing
● Coaching individuals to improve their own writing and storytelling
● Helping teams show their work through screenshots, short videos, and demos, not just written descriptions
● Supporting internal communication with ministers, permanent secretaries, and other stakeholders
● Maintaining a consistent tone and voice aligned with GovTech's values
What you'll deliver
● Regular written content that explains the work of delivery teams in plain language
● Weeknotes or progress updates that honestly reflect what teams are doing and learning
● Screenshots, demos, and short videos that make progress tangible
● Briefings and updates for senior government stakeholders
● Templates, prompts, and guides that make it easier for others to communicate
● Improved communication skills across delivery teams
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who is comfortable working from ambiguity and enjoys helping others communicate well.
You should have:
● Strong writing skills, with experience making complex or technical topics clear and readable
● Editorial judgement and the ability to spot what's interesting, useful, or important
● Experience coaching or helping others improve their writing and communication
● The ability to work collaboratively without needing formal authority
● Confidence working from incomplete information and the ability to ask good questions
● An understanding of how to use visuals, video, and demos to show work, not just describe it
Experience in the following would be an asset:
● Working in or alongside digital, technology, or delivery teams
● Agile or iterative environments
● Public sector, non-profit, or mission-driven organisations
● Working with government stakeholders or in politically sensitive contexts
Reporting to
This role reports to the Director of Communications.
Role details
● This role is offered on a contract basis (initially one year, with potential extension)
● Location is flexible; remote working is supported
● You will work closely with multidisciplinary delivery teams across GovTech Barbados
Why this role matters
Working in the open builds trust. When teams share what they are doing honestly, it helps colleagues, stakeholders, and the public understand what digital government looks like in practice.
This role plays a key part in making that happen, not by doing all the communication, but by making it easier for everyone to communicate well.
If you enjoy writing, shaping ideas, and helping others share their work, we'd love to hear from you.
