
Senior Software Engineer, Front End Lead
THE ROLE
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead our Front End team and elevate the customer experience across Grove's web and mobile platforms, built on Shopify. In this role, you’ll be responsible for setting the technical direction, coaching engineers, and driving cross-functional collaboration with Product, Design, Analytics, other Engineering teams, and other stakeholder groups (e.g., Marketing, Merchandising). You'll lead the team in building intuitive, performant, and accessible experiences that reflect our brand values, support millions of customer interactions, and earn customer trust and love.
WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO
- Serve as the technical lead for all front end initiatives across Grove’s Shopify-based web and mobile experiences
- Partner closely with product managers and designers to translate vision into technical execution
- Drive architectural decisions and front end strategy in a Shopify-native environment using Liquid, React, and modern frontend tooling
- Ensure high performance, stability, accessibility, and maintainability across all front end code
- Partner closely with our ecosystem of third-party partners—including mobile apps, subscription services, analytics providers, search and discovery tools, and loyalty platforms—to build performant, delightful customer experiences
- Collaborate with backend and platform teams to ensure seamless integration with Shopify apps and services
- Review code, mentor engineers, and support their technical growth
- Partner with analytics teams to ensure robust tracking is in place to measure overall customer experience performance and trends, as well as new feature and optimization performance
- Partner with UX Design to continue to define and scale Grove’s design system and UI component library on our new Shopify architecture
- Champion best practices in testing, documentation, and front end development workflows
ABOUT YOU
- 7+ years of experience in front end development, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role
- 5+ years experience with modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue, Svelte, Angular)
- Deep expertise in JavaScript, modern React (hooks, context, functional components), Redux (or RTK Query), and performance optimization for consumer facing applications
- Experience working within the Shopify ecosystem, understands what’s possible with native features and when and how to customize with third-party integrations )
- Extensive experience building custom Shopify themes using Liquid and Online Store 2.0 (sections, metaobjects, metafields), Checkout Extensions, Storefront API and standard Cart API
- Strong product intuition and the ability to balance technical tradeoffs with business needs
- Strong sense of ownership and pride in the customer experiences you build and the code you release
- Experience working in cross-functional teams and mentoring engineers
- Thoughtful communicator who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
- A growth mindset and enthusiasm for Grove’s mission and sustainability values
STAND OUT CANDIDATES WILL ALSO HAVE
- Proficiency with GraphQL and Typescript; familiarity with Alpine.js a strong plus
- Experience with Shopify subscription-based eCommerce such as Ordergroove or Recharge
- Experience with React Testing Library and test runners like Jest or Vitest
- Strong understanding of GH actions and Git workflows in a team environment
- A strong sense of design, accessibility, and user empathy
- Experience with A/B testing frameworks and experimentation platforms
- Experience building delightful e-commerce experiences
- Familiarity with Heap, Tapcart, Ordergroove, Constructor.io, Braze, or other common Shopify ecosystem tools

COMPENSATION
$135-200k. Our compensation bands are adjusted based on market-specific cost of living data, meaning that the top of our salary range is reserved for the most experienced candidates in the highest cost of living areas across the country. In addition to the base salary, this role is also eligible for an annual bonus and equity.
