ID.me is a full-time, in-office culture. Unless a specific job description explicitly states otherwise, all roles are on-site five days per week at one of our offices in McLean, VA; Mountain View, CA; New York City, NY; or Tampa, FL. Certain roles — such as field-based sales or other remote-by-design positions — may have different work arrangements as noted in their individual postings.

At ID.me, we embrace the thoughtful use of AI tools in our daily work and there are even occasions where we leverage AI in our hiring process. However, during the interview process, we want to understand your individual skills and experiences. Therefore, we have guidelines on how AI can be appropriately used during your application and interviews which can be found here.

Role Overview

ID.me is seeking a Staff Software Engineer (SDE V – Developer Experience & AI Platform) to lead the technical design, architecture, and execution of our internal developer platform and AI-driven automation infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for building key developer tools, multi-agent workflows, and LLM orchestration systems that strictly target internal engineering workflows (e.g., service scaffolding, CI/CD automation, and developer-facing tooling) to empower engineering teams to build, deploy, and operate services efficiently at scale.

Please note: This role is focused entirely on internal developer experience. Experience building customer-facing conversational bots, chat products, or member-support automation does not substitute for internal platform and infrastructure engineering experience. This role is onsite 5 days a week in Mountain View, California.

This position sits at the intersection of platform engineering, developer experience, and artificial intelligence. You will lead hands-on development, establish architectural patterns, build stateful AI agent workflows, and set AI safety guardrails across the engineering organization. You will partner closely with SRE, security, and core infrastructure teams to create an integrated, high-velocity development ecosystem.

This role is based out of our Mountain View, CA or McLean, VA office and requires full-time in-office attendance. Remote and hybrid candidates will not be considered. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are not offered for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Architect AI-Augmented Developer Tools: Lead the hands-on building of internal developer platforms, service scaffolding, and automated CI/CD tooling that accelerate software delivery. This work explicitly targets internal engineering workflows, rather than customer-facing bots or member-support automation.
  • Design Agentic Systems & LLM Orchestration: Build multi-agent automation systems and adaptive conversational flows using frameworks such as LangGraph and foundation model APIs.
  • Develop Workflow Abstractions: Create Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) and Finite State Machine (FSM) abstractions to model, control, and route complex multi-agent platform tasks.
  • Manage Stateful Context: Implement Near Real-Time Memory (NRTM) and shared session management to maintain persistent state and context across developer tools, bots, and internal APIs.
  • Build Resilient Distributed Systems: Implement high-availability orchestration patterns using Redis for state management, Kafka for event streaming, and custom Dead Letter Queue (DLQ) bridges for message reliability.
  • Establish AI Guardrails & Governance: Apply prompt engineering best practices, reduce model hallucinations, and enforce strict logging and safety standards so sensitive platform data is never exposed to external models.
  • Observability & Health Monitoring: Instrument microservices telemetry using sidecar patterns, data streams, and automated health checks to feed internal Datadog dashboards.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Coach mid-level and senior engineers, lead architectural design reviews, and establish engineering standards for AI agents and platform systems.
  • Measure & Optimize DevEx: Define and monitor key DevEx metrics (e.g., onboarding time, deployment success rates, task automation velocity) to continuously drive developer productivity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience developing backend systems, distributed architectures, or core platform tools.
  • 2+ years of experience operating explicitly at a Staff or Principal engineering scope.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership: Must have formal experience mentoring 2+ engineers, leading architecture review processes, or acting as the primary technical lead for a multi-engineer project team.
  • Strong hands-on coding skills in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, or Go.
  • Deep experience in microservices architecture, RESTful web services, and event-driven architectures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AI Agents & LLM Orchestration: Hands-on experience building agentic workflows, multi-agent systems, and LLM integrations using LangGraph, AWS Bedrock, OpenAI API, and Anthropic API.
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform): Extensive, practical experience specifically using Terraform for cloud provisioning, state management, and scalable infrastructure deployment.
  • Domain Abstractions: Experience developing Domain-Specific Languages (DSL), Finite State Machines (FSM), and dynamic agent routing algorithms.
  • Data & State Infrastructure: Strong experience with Redis, Kafka, PostgreSQL, NoSQL databases, and streaming platforms.
  • Platform Infrastructure: Practical experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud deployment on AWS.
  • System Resilience: Experience implementing reliability patterns such as Dead Letter Queues (DLQs), sidecar monitoring, automated secret management, and self-healing mechanisms.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Proven ability to mentor engineers, influence architectural choices, and partner across cross-functional product and security teams.

The annual base salary listed does not include a company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity and benefits which will be determined based on experience, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location and role.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
