Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Commercial Trucking Insurance Underwriter/Broker to join our Transportation team. This role is responsible for evaluating, quoting, and managing new and renewal business within the commercial auto and trucking sector. The ideal candidate is capable of managing a high-volume workload while maintaining strong relationships with retail agency partners and carriers, making informed, data-driven underwriting decisions that align with strategic growth and profitability goals.
Position Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Analysis
Evaluate new and renewal commercial trucking accounts—up to 40 per week—with premiums ranging from $50,000 to $100,000+
Analyze risk using loss runs, MVRs, CAB reports, SAFER scores, FMCSA data, and other relevant underwriting materials
Make eligibility and pricing recommendations in alignment with underwriting guidelines and carrier appetites
Proposal Preparation & Market Submission
Prepare comprehensive market submissions, quote proposals, and coverage comparisons
Review policies, binders, and endorsements for completeness and accuracy before client delivery
Carrier & Client Relations
Communicate effectively with retail agents and internal stakeholders to gather complete and accurate risk data
Negotiate with carriers to secure competitive terms, leveraging existing market relationships
Account Monitoring & Policy Servicing
Track performance of bound accounts to identify profitability issues or loss trends
Address billing, endorsement, cancellation, and invoicing issues in partnership with Premium Accounting
Claims & Compliance Support
Ensure prompt and accurate reporting of claims to the appropriate departments
Maintain well-organized and compliant electronic documentation of all submissions and carrier communications
Cross-Department Collaboration
Partner with actuarial, accounting, and risk management teams to support pricing strategy, auditing, and planning
Industry Awareness & Administrative Support
Stay up to date on industry trends, DOT/FMCSA regulations, and carrier appetite shifts
Perform administrative tasks such as document scanning, filing, and recordkeeping as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, or a related field preferred
Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial insurance underwriting or brokerage (trucking, commercial auto, or casualty lines preferred)
Experience in both wholesale and/or retail brokerage settings
Professional designations (e.g., CIC, CPCU, AU) strongly preferred
Active Property & Casualty license required; Surplus Lines license is a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; knowledge of agency management systems (e.g., AMS360, IMS) a plus
Strong analytical, communication, and time-management skills
Self-motivated, able to work independently in a remote or hybrid environment
