Payroll Systems Manager (6215)

itD is seeking a Payroll Systems Manager to lead payroll operations and payroll technology initiatives that ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll delivery across a growing workforce. This role will serve as the subject matter expert for payroll systems and processes, partnering across HR, Finance, Benefits, and Legal to drive operational excellence, enhance employee experience, and support global payroll initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in payroll operations, payroll systems administration, and process optimization, with a proven track record of improving payroll accuracy, compliance, and scalability.

Location: Remote within the United States. Candidates located in DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) or Houston, Texas are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and optimize payroll platforms, including configuration, workflows, security permissions, audits, reporting, and integrations.
  • Process and oversee multi-state U.S. payroll, including off-cycle payrolls, bonuses, commissions, garnishments, tax reporting, and year-end activities.
  • Troubleshoot payroll system issues and coordinate with vendors to resolve technical and operational challenges.
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities to improve payroll accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and employee experience.
  • Develop, maintain, and document payroll standard operating procedures, internal controls, and process documentation.
  • Partner closely with HR, Finance, Benefits, and Legal teams to support compensation changes, leave programs, compliance requirements, and reporting needs.
  • Lead payroll-related projects, system enhancements, testing efforts, and vendor management activities.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing payroll documentation, reports, and compliance records.
  • Assist with global payroll initiatives and collaborate with international stakeholders to support payroll operations across multiple countries.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior payroll team members as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5–7+ years of payroll operations experience, including multi-state U.S. payroll processing.
  • 3+ years of payroll systems administration and management experience.
  • 3+ years of global payroll experience supporting multiple countries and regions.
  • Experience administering payroll platforms such as Paycom, Rippling, ADP, UKG, or similar solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing payroll audits, reporting, controls, and process documentation.
  • Experience partnering with HR, Finance, Benefits, and Legal stakeholders.
  • Strong systems troubleshooting, configuration, and process improvement skills.
  • Experience working within a consulting, professional services, or client-facing environment.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • 10+ years of payroll experience.
  • Experience with Paycom, Rippling, NetSuite, and QuickBooks.
  • Experience supporting payroll operations for a global workforce.
  • Experience leading payroll system implementations, upgrades, or optimization initiatives.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.
  • Experience managing payroll vendors and third-party service providers.
  • Experience mentoring payroll specialists, analysts, or coordinators.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience required.
