Data Engineer

itD is seeking a Data Engineer to design and deliver high-complexity data pipelines and monitoring systems that support critical legal and eDiscovery infrastructure. This role will play a key part in building scalable data workflows, enabling alerting systems, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders—including legal, data science, and engineering teams—to deliver reliable, secure, and compliant data solutions. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in data engineering and pipeline development and a proven track record of delivering end-to-end data infrastructure projects in complex, highly regulated environments.

Location: Remote (California preferred; Bay Area candidates strongly preferred, occasional onsite in San Francisco may be required)

Duration: 6months

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain high-complexity ETL pipelines to process large-scale datasets efficiently
  • Develop and manage monitoring and alerting systems to ensure data reliability and integrity
  • Collaborate with attorneys, data scientists, and cross-functional stakeholders to define data requirements and solutions
  • Lead end-to-end data engineering initiatives across multiple stakeholders and systems
  • Optimize data workflows, query performance, and pipeline efficiency across large data environments
  • Create documentation, implementation plans, and deployment strategies for new data systems
  • Ensure data privacy, security, and compliance standards are maintained across all solutions

Internal Responsibilities

  • Attend regular internal practice community meetings
  • Collaborate with your itD practice team on industry thought leadership
  • Complete client case studies and learning material (blogs, media material)
  • Build out material to contribute to the Digital Transformation practice
  • Attend internal itD networking events (in person and virtual)
  • Work with leadership on career fast-track opportunities

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering (6+ years acceptable with strong additional experience)
  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL (Presto, Postgres, MySQL, or equivalent)
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python
  • Strong experience building and managing ETL pipelines at scale
  • Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow or equivalent)
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional data engineering projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to work across technical and non-technical teams

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience leveraging AI/ML tools to automate workflows or accelerate delivery
  • Background in regulated environments (legal, compliance, privacy, security, finance)
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical initiatives
  • Experience in startup or fast-paced environments with high ambiguity
  • Exposure to data loss prevention or remediation workflows
  • Familiarity with data warehousing and large-scale monitoring systems

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience required
