The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Los Angeles, California in 2028, returning to the United States for the first time in over 30 years. 2028 will be the first time LA hosts the Paralympic Games, creating an opportunity to expand awareness, understanding and inclusion of people with disabilities.

The LA28 organizing committee is an independent, non-profit organization that is privately funded and governed by a board of directors.

Director, Torch Relays & Ceremonies
The Olympic Torch Relay (OTR) is a unique part of the Olympic Games and plays a key role in
expressing the Olympic ideals of peace, unity and friendship through the highly recognized and regarded symbol of the Olympic flame. It is also particularly valuable in sharing the Olympic Games throughout the host country and developing a sense of excitement and anticipation for the forthcoming Games.
The Paralympic Torch Relay (PTR) is a unique part of the Paralympic Games. The PTR is one of the most important communication tools to promote the Paralympic spirit and values, putting the population in touch with the Paralympic Games and keeping the momentum during the transition period from the Olympic Games.
Ceremonies (Olympics & Paralympics): The primary objective is to deliver an amazing & unforgettable Opening and Closing Ceremonies that represents the City of Los Angeles in all its glory, which is a unique mecca of diverse cultures, creative thinkers & entertainers; ensure the Ceremonies embody the LA28 brand vision; showcase our country internationally and creates national pride and international admiration; ensure the Ceremonies reflect and respect the Athletes and their interests.
The Director, Torch Relay and Ceremonies would be responsible for coordinating the local, state, and federal law enforcement entities, along with international partners, and private sector stakeholders involved in the torch relay. This role would work closely with the internal & external teams who would conceive, develop, manage and execute the Olympic & Paralympic Torch Relay for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. This role is crucial in developing the security plan and delivery model of the Torch Relay(s) from its origin of Athens for the Olympic Relay & Stoke-Mandeville for the Paralympic Relay. Reporting to the SVP, Safety and Security, this individual would be responsible for coordinating the security planning and cross functional engagement for the four (4) Opening & Closing Ceremonies and all Victory Medal Ceremonies for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive security plan providing input on the route development, scope timeline management, and convey operation.
- Coordination: Manage and coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement entities, along with national and international stakeholders.
- Logistics Management: Oversee the security logistics of the Torch Relay, including security operations for torchbearers.
- Engagement: Assist in the security planning and execution pertaining to community engagement initiatives, including public celebrations and events, to maximize the impact and visibility of the OTR & PTR and return-on-investment opportunities for partners
- Partner Integration: Work with USOPP to identify and manage security partner/supplier sponsorship(s)
- Compliance: Ensure all security plans comply with Olympic & Paralympic protocols and regulations
- Problem-Solving: Address any security issues or challenges that arise during the planning and execution phases, ensuring minimal disruption to the relay.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Work with the Event Management and Government Affairs teams; other OCOG areas that interact with OTR operations; liaison with Ceremonies area regarding delivery and management of the flame, etc.
- Team Management: Be a highly effective and visible leader within the organization and serve as a role model for our values and culture.
Background & Qualifications:
- 15+ years of federal law enforcement experience
- Experience working internationally in a law enforcement capacity
- Experience with incident response and coordination across internal and external stakeholders
- Experience working with Fortune 500 companies to develop public-private partnerships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
- Experience with withstanding stress and managing fatigue on a mobile tour of national scope with media exposure and significant visibility
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
- Ability to propose innovative solutions, adapt to unknown situations
- Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities, with a keen eye for detail
- Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and traditions
- A passion for the Olympic & Paralympic Movement and its values is a plus

- The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment, employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneously

The annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
