Senior Machine Learning Engineer

Loka, a globally distributed tech consultancy based in Silicon Valley, is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our growing team. In this position you will serve as the primary specialist in designing and implementing machine learning solutions across multiple projects. Your expertise in ML algorithms and ML, DL and Foundation Models will empower us to develop robust, scalable systems and improve them over time. Ultimately we expect you to not just fit in with our ML crew but to elevate it to new heights.
Our technical teams help clients launch innovations that fix the climate, defeat cancer, improve agricultural efficiencies, teach kids to read and more. We work with all kinds of companies, from Silicon Valley startups to major household brands, always guided by our fundamental belief that mission matters.

The Role
Take full responsibility for assigned tasks and projects, ensuring accountability for outcomes and results.
Understand business objectives and develop models that help achieve them, along with metrics to track progress.
Design and implement complex ML systems using classical machine learning, deep learning and foundation models, adhering to best practices.
Lead client communications by gathering requirements, managing expectations and communicating deliverables effectively.
Wrangle, explore and visualize data with a keen eye for issues requiring data cleaning, as well as differences in data distribution that may affect post-deployment performance.
Analyze model errors and design strategies to overcome them.
Deploy, maintain and upgrade ML models and pipelines.
Follow Loka’s career track for growth by demonstrating technical excellence, innovation, autonomy, ownership, communication and teamwork.
Drive architectural decisions and contribute to high-level planning and strategy.
Direct report to ML leads.
Stay updated with industry trends to incorporate cutting-edge techniques and tools into projects.
Write and maintain technical documentation.
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior ML engineers within the team.
Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams (Data Engineering, DevOps, Backend) to ensure seamless integration of ML solutions.
Continuously optimize models for performance, scalability and cost-effectiveness, especially within the AWS environment.
Required Hard Skills
4+ years of ML engineering experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related
Experience with Python, ML libraries and AI/ML frameworks (PyTorch, HuggingFace, TensorFlow, etc.)
Experience building GenAI solutions using LLMs, including frameworks like LangChain and LlamaIndex, prompt engineering, fine-tuning and serving models, and implementing common patterns like RAG and NLQ
Client-facing experience
Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools

As Loka’s Senior DevOps Engineer, you'll be the go-to specialist for crafting and deploying infrastructure across a variety of projects. Your skills in AWS, TypeScript and Python will allow us to build solid, scalable systems and improve them over time. The Role
Develop technical design specifications based on functional requirements and develop and maintain AWS Cloud applications.
Orchestrate containers with Kubernetes.
Automate operations, implement CI/CD pipelines.
Ensure security and compliance.
Assess change implementation options, benefits and risks and recommend the most appropriate approach with minimal assistance.

Regional Human Resources Business Partner
In the last 18 months at Loka, our teams have helped clients advance the world’s #1 AI reading tutor, eliminate $1B in food waste and develop novel drugs for fighting cancer. As Loka’s Regional Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) you will play a pivotal role in ensuring a positive employee experience and supporting managers and employees across the organization. This role requires someone who can balance regional operational excellence with global strategic alignment, serving as the key HR leader for the West Europe region. You will act as a trusted advisor on HR-related matters at our Portugal office and support employees across the EU, handle employee relations and drive key HR initiatives including performance management, compliance and employee engagement. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence Loka’s workplace culture, develop and implement impactful HR strategies and support the growth of a global, dynamic team.
Key Responsibilities
Support managers and employees through regular meetings, career coaching, conflict resolution and performance management across Portugal & the Western European region.
Partner with leadership to translate business goals into people strategies and HR solutions.
Contribute to global strategic HR planning, shaping initiatives with global insights at scale.
Drive the performance-management cycle (goal-setting, reviews, development plans, etc) while focusing on growth and feedback for the entire region.
Conduct stay interviews and engagement check-ins to help Loka stay ahead of retention risks.
Lead regional projects and co-lead global, cross-regional initiatives in areas like organizational design, change management and employee experience improvements.
Promote Loka’s culture by standardizing the employee experience across all countries.
Lead employee relations cases, including investigations and disciplinary processes, with fairness and consistency.
Oversee onboarding and development for new hires while providing guidance on promotions, salary reviews and career progression planning
Analyze HR data and trends by tracking employee satisfaction and retention patterns and identify potential workplace issues via surveys and metrics.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
At least four years of HR experience, with a focus on employee relations, performance management and policy implementation
Strong knowledge of local Portuguese employment laws and regulations across regions (experience in Europe and/or Latin America is a plus)
Proficiency in managing HRIS systems and handling confidential employee data
Proven ability to build strong relationships with employees and managers at all levels
Excellent communication, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
Experience designing and delivering training and development programs (considered a plus)
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global environment
A proactive mindset with a commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture
