POSITION OVERVIEW
The mission for the Engineering Ecosystem Org at Oportun is to be the force-multiplicative Org that empowers engineers to deliver member value with high-speed and high-quality. The Security Engineering Team plays a vital role in designing, developing, and maintaining cutting-edge software solutions that power our mission and advance our business. We strike a balance between leveraging leading tools and developing in-house solutions to create member experiences that empower their financial independence. The engineers in this group are strong Backend Developers, well versed with Security technologies and lead from the front to improve the security posture of the company.
As a Senior Manager, Software Engineering - Security at Oportun, you will lead the Security Engineering team and will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale, high-throughput foundational security services and libraries such as Authentication, Authorization, Encryption, Tokenization etc. You will also own automating Security Pipelines that bring improved observability into the security posture of the company. In addition, you will own driving down Security Vulnerabilities and subsequently keeping that number low. You will innovate and think out of the box to help improve the security posture of the company. You will conduct Threat Modeling reviews - both Application and Operational to identify threats that we can then mitigate.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build large-scale services: (re)Design, Build and maintain large-scale, high-throughput foundational security services and libraries such as Authentication, Authorization, Encryption, Tokenization, Entitlements
- Data Analysis: Perform in-depth data analysis of various security signals to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement related to Oportun's financial products.
- Market Research: Stay updated on various threat vectors, and incorporate appropriate defenses into the Oportun platform, providing insights and recommendations for product enhancements.
- Product Development: Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and designers to contribute to the development and improvement of financial products and the platform.
- A/B Testing: Plan, execute, and analyze A/B tests to evaluate the performance of product changes and optimize features.
- Customer Insights: Leverage customer feedback, surveys, and research to understand user behavior, preferences, and pain points.
- Reporting: Create and maintain detailed reports and dashboards to track the security posture and product performance and KPIs.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with various teams, including marketing, compliance, and operations, to align product strategies with business goals.
- Documentation: Document findings, insights, and recommendations for product enhancements and communicate them effectively to stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated focus on Computer/Network/Information Security
- 13+ years of overall experience in engineering with Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline.
- 3+ years of recent management experience managing 10+ team members
- 10+ years of individual contributor engineering experience engineering products with a modern tech stack, preferably Java, REST, Spring Framework, any relational DB, CI/CD in an agile environment.
- Demonstrated track record of building and managing high performing engineering teams in a fast paced, high impact, high growth environment.
- Passion for building and shipping products that users love with high quality and speed.

- Enjoy staying technical and is able and willing jump in and code or debug issues to help your team.
- Experience working with a NoSQL Database like MongoDB.

- Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with product, design, and other engineering teams to ship services.
- Experience in the design of new systems or redesign of existing systems to meet business req’s, changing needs, or newer technology.
- Ability to break down complex concepts into easily understood frameworks and models.
- Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts.
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
- Passion and convictions and the innate ability to inspire passion in others, and the ability to establish and sell the business and technical vision for a complicated problem area.
PREFERED SKILLS
- Master’s degree in computer/network/information security
- Familiarity with financial products and services
