Director, Corporate Communications

About Relay

Relay, a dynamic and rapidly growing venture-backed technology company based in Raleigh, NC, is on a mission to revolutionize frontline work. For decades, technology has supercharged desk workers while leaving the 80% of the global workforce who don't sit at desks behind. The result is a staggering 90% productivity gap between information workers and frontline teams. At Relay, our mission is to close this gap by building the Intelligent System of Action that helps frontline teams SOAR. We're building tools that meet frontline workers where they are, capturing tribal knowledge, and turning communication into action. By leveraging our connected cloud ecosystem and AI, we empower these essential teams to communicate more effectively, work more safely, and operate more productively.

As a high-growth, venture-backed technology company with IPO ambitions, we've already been recognized for our trajectory, ranking #175 on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500.

Our Culture

We are an innovative, mission-driven team dedicated to revolutionizing how frontline workers operate.

We balance a high-velocity work cadence with a low-ego, collaborative spirit. This is a true meritocracy designed for high-impact leaders who are comfortable operating at the highest levels, including frequent strategic engagement with our senior leadership team.

Mission & Opportunity

As Director of Corporate Communications, you will own the roadmap and shaping of Relay's external growth narrative during the most defining phase of our company's history. Reporting to the VP of Marketing, this is a marquee leadership role for a proven communications operator to serve as the strategic voice of the company — bridging our executive team, the media, our employees, and the markets we are reshaping.

You will own our PR relationship end-to-end and rally cross-functional executive leadership into a single, sharpened, externally resonant story. You will own the Content Marketing function and be responsible for building our voice of influence in the market, pushing Relay to own the "Connected Worker" category across Industrial, Healthcare, and Hospitality.

This is a builder's role. You are not here to maintain a comms machine — you are here to architect one that scales from Series B through IPO and beyond.

Ranked among the fastest-growing tech companies in North America, we are looking for the next generation of "Relayers" to help us digitize the final frontier of the workforce.

Why Join Relay?

  • Work at the Edge of Innovation: We just secured our 100th patent. You'll shape the narrative around technologies spanning AI-driven noise suppression, real-time language translation, and advanced IoT connectivity.
  • Massive Scale: Be part of a platform that processes over 1 billion data points every week. Our tech isn't just "cool" — it's essential infrastructure for the global economy.
  • Category-Defining Moment: "Connected Worker" is the next great enterprise category, and Relay is positioned to own it. You will be the person who plants that flag in the market.
  • LIT Culture (Learning, Impact, Teamwork): We pride ourselves on an environment where leaders have a seat at the table and see their work immediately impact global brands.
  • Hyper-Growth Trajectory: With massive growth and new C-suite leaders who have led successful IPOs, you are joining a rocket ship at the perfect time.
  • Best-in-Class Perks: Based in our high-tech Raleigh headquarters, you'll enjoy 100% company-paid benefits, a 401(k) match, and a hybrid work model that balances flexibility with high-energy collaboration.

What you'll do

You will own Relay's external growth narrative and the corporate communications infrastructure that protects and amplifies our reputation as we scale toward IPO. As a hands-on leader, you will:

  • Own the external growth narrative. Architect and continually advance Relay's corporate narrative as a strategic instrument — sharpening how we talk about Connected Worker, our category leadership, and the proof points that earn us the right to win in Industrial, Healthcare, and Hospitality. Translate complex product, financial, and operational realities into a story the market understands and remembers.
  • Own the PR relationship and earned media engine. Serve as, or oversee, the primary point of contact for the press. Build and manage agency and freelance partners, drive press release strategy, field inbound media inquiries, and proactively land Relay in the publications, podcasts, and stages that matter most to our buyers, our talent, and our investors.
  • Rally cross-functional executive leadership. Partner directly with our senior leadership team to align them around a single, coherent external narrative. Draft thought leadership, shape executive points of view, build keynote and earnings-style talking points, and prepare spokespeople for high-stakes public moments.
  • Own the Content Marketing function. Lead the strategy, team, and operating cadence for content across our owned channels — building the voice of influence that establishes Relay as the definitive authority on the Connected Worker. Set the thought leadership roadmap, partner with Product Marketing and segment leaders on Industrial, Healthcare, and Hospitality narratives, and translate field intelligence into category-defining points of view.
  • Drive integrated executive visibility and thought leadership. Build a deliberate, measurable executive visibility program for our senior leadership team — bylines, podcasts, conference stages, social platforms, and analyst engagements — that compounds Relay's voice of influence in our priority sectors.
  • Lead crisis communications and reputation management. Design contingency plans, build the muscle and the playbooks, and serve as the trusted advisor and spokesperson during sensitive, high-profile, or emergency situations. Protect Relay's reputation with the rigor expected of a public company.
  • Operate internal communications as a strategic lever. Drive employee engagement by ensuring corporate updates, company culture, and business objectives are clearly and consistently communicated across the workforce. Build the all-hands, exec memo, and milestone communications rhythm that scales as we double in size.
  • Instill public-company communications rigor. Build the disclosure discipline, messaging governance, IR-adjacent communications, and analyst relations foundations now — well in advance of a potential IPO — so that Relay enters public markets with a fully formed external voice.
  • Measure what matters. Own a clear set of KPIs across share of voice, earned coverage quality, executive visibility, content engagement, narrative penetration in target segments, and reputation health. Translate data into action and reporting that the senior leadership team and board can trust.
  • Scale, mentor, and develop a high-performing team. Build and develop a world-class corporate communications and content marketing organization with clear ownership, accountability, and growth paths.

What you'll bring

  • Communications acumen: 8–10+ years of progressive experience in corporate communications, public relations, or journalism, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role. Strong preference for candidates who have led communications at premier high-growth public or private technology companies, particularly through a Series C, pre-IPO, or IPO milestone.
  • Category-building experience: You have shaped, named, or meaningfully advanced a market category. You understand the difference between writing about a product and building a movement around a point of view.
  • Elite executive partnership: Proven experience as a trusted advisor to CEOs, CFOs, and other C-suite leaders. You ghostwrite with their voice, you challenge their thinking when it matters, and you make them better on stage, on the record, and in front of investors.
  • Media relations mastery: Deep, active relationships with top-tier business, technology, and vertical media (Industrial, Healthcare, Hospitality a strong plus). You have a track record of landing the kind of coverage that moves pipeline, talent, and valuation — not just impressions.
  • Content leadership: You have built or scaled a content marketing function as a force multiplier for the business. You understand SEO, narrative architecture, distribution, and how to operate content as a system, not a series of one-off assets.
  • Crisis fluency: You have stood at the front of real crises and led companies through them with calm, clarity, and judgment. You build the plan before you need it.
  • Data orientation: You have an affinity for the numbers behind communications — share of voice, sentiment, narrative penetration, content performance — and you use them to sharpen strategy, not just report on it.
  • High velocity operator: You have a bias for action and thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, and bring a builder and continuous improvement mentality to designing processes and infrastructure that scale with the business.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication: Your writing is elite. You can move between executive thought leadership, press release, internal all-hands script, board narrative, and crisis statement without losing precision or voice.
  • Owner mentality: You practice extreme ownership and take accountability for this mission in a dynamic environment. You rely on building systems and processes to drive success.
  • Strong people leader: Experience in building and developing high-performing teams across in-house staff, agencies, and freelance networks.
  • Integrity: You maintain the highest standards and are trustworthy with sensitive, material, and confidential information.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field required.
