About the Role

We're looking for an experienced lawyer who is enthusiastic about fintech and the innovation it can bring to business banking and financial management. With your proven track record in banking, payments, and card, as well as your creativity and resourcefulness, you will advise teams and help lead high-profile, cross-functional initiatives across Rho involving a variety of complex regulatory, legal, and commercial issues. You will provide end-to-end legal, risk, and regulatory guidance on a variety of matters, including products, payments, marketing, commercial matters, partnerships, compliance, employment, and customer requests. As a trusted partner to Rho’s General Counsel, you will work with executives, cross-functional teams, outside counsel, and commercial partners while identifying priorities and maintaining flexibility and balance in a fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on lawyer with strong business acumen, capable of working independently and collaboratively with multi-stakeholder teams and external partners. You will be expected to demonstrate sharp analytical skills, excellent legal and business judgment, and strategic thinking. Your role will involve direct collaboration with internal stakeholders such as Product, Engineering, Payments, Marketing, Sales, and Partnerships to devise creative solutions from ideation to launch. Organizational skills, attention to detail, a proactive mindset, as well as the ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality, are essential. Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal counsel across Rho by proactively assessing, advising on, and mitigating potential legal and regulatory risks, in order to maintain the integrity of the business and its products
  • Foster effective internal relationships and collaborate with cross-functional teams to strategically address legal needs, mitigate risks, facilitate initiatives, and ensure policies are in alignment with Rho's product, corporate, compliance, marketing, and regulatory objectives
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of business contracts and transactions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals
  • Monitor trends and stay informed on legal and regulatory developments in the technology and financial services sectors, translating complex legal concepts into actionable guidance
  • Provide senior support for regulatory examinations, external audits, and third-party diligence, fostering a deep understanding of internal processes and policy impacts
  • Develop and refine corporate policies, procedures, and programs, offering legal expertise to all organizational levels
  • Review and consult on compliance matters, including mandatory outside reporting, audits, and reviews, and maintain professional relationships with regulatory agencies and government entities, ensuring the company navigates a dynamic regulatory landscape effectively

Qualifications

  • Must have a J.D. degree with strong academic credentials and be admitted to practice in New York 
  • Must have at least 7+ years of combined, relevant experience at major law firms or in-house legal departments, with deep and practical knowledge and expertise in fintech, banking, or financial services, and a generalist, analytical mindset
  • Extensive knowledge of legal and regulatory matters involving banking, payments, card, treasury, corporate governance, employment law, contracts, and compliance, with a commitment to thoughtfully align with organizational goals
  • Ability to provide holistic, creative, solution-oriented legal guidance, advise on product development, go-to-market strategies, and regulatory and compliance-related requirements, and draft necessary policies and disclosures
  • Superior analytical and communication skills to simplify complex issues for senior management, orchestrate resolutions and risk mitigation plans, drive accountability, and influence outcomes
  • Demonstrate a hands-on, ownership mentality with the capacity to independently manage complex legal matters and initiatives, applying sound judgment and an entrepreneurial approach in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, while effectively managing tight deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to develop critical relationships and a detail-oriented, organized approach with strong follow-through and a positive attitude
  • Expertise in drafting, negotiating, and managing contracts with a proactive, flexible, and team-oriented attitude
  • Advanced ability to quickly assess legal risks, evaluate and solve problems, prioritize multiple high-profile projects, and maintain a diligent, organized, and professional demeanor under pressure, while balancing legal risk mitigation against key business objectives and risks
  • A positive attitude and strong integrity, ethics, and judgment, with advanced project management skills and a team player, hands-on approach to cross-departmental coordination
  • Develop trusted relationships with business partners, stay informed on product developments, and coordinate with support teams to provide integrated solutions for business partners
  • Actively cultivate creative ideas and insights into how legal frameworks can support new product developments and customer experiences
  • Familiarity with technology product launches and legal aspects of product development, translating legal advice into actionable guidance for teams

Our people are our most valuable asset. The salary range for this role is $200,000 - $275,000. Title and base salary may vary depending on relevant experience, skills, geographic location, and business needs. In addition to base pay, Rho offers equity, healthcare benefits and paid time off.
