Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Electronics
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Electronics to lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced power systems for our cutting-edge robotics solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for designing power electronics, motor control circuits, and energy management systems that enable high-performance, efficient, and reliable robotic applications.
Why RoboForce
RoboForce, an AI-Robotics company, is building a first-of-its-kind Robotic Workforce System to take on the most tedious, force-demanding, and dangerous work humans don't have to do.
At RoboForce, we're building a small team with a flat org structure and extreme talent density. Currently, we have top tech leaders from CMU Robotics, Michigan Robotics, Amazon Robotics, Tesla Robotics, Google, Waymo, Apple, and Microsoft. RoboForce is backed by world-class investors, including the Nobel Prize Laureate, Carnegie Mellon University, and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop power electronics circuits, including electronics system, DC-DC converters, inverters, and motor controllers, for robotic systems.
- Develop battery management systems (BMS) and charging solutions for high-performance robotic applications.
- Optimize power distribution systems to ensure efficiency, reliability, and safety under dynamic operating conditions.
- Conduct thermal and electrical simulations to validate designs and ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate power electronics into robotic platforms, including mobile robots and robotic arms.
- Troubleshoot and debug power electronics issues at the component, board, and system levels.
- Lead the development of testing procedures for power systems, including accelerated life testing and stress testing.
- Author detailed design documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, and technical specifications.
- Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in power electronics and apply them to robotics development.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in power electronics design, preferably in robotics, automotive, or related industries.
- Proficiency in designing motor controllers, inverters, and DC-DC converters.
- Experience with battery systems, including BMS design and lithium-ion battery technologies.
- Strong understanding of power electronics simulation tools (e.g., LTspice, PLECS, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with PCB design and layout tools, such as Altium Designer.
- Solid knowledge of thermal management and EMI/EMC design considerations.
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other diagnostic tools.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high-power systems (e.g., >2 kW) for robotics or industrial applications.
- Familiarity with wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN) and their application in power electronics.
- Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, EtherCAT, or Modbus.
- Experience with safety and regulatory standards, such as IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or UL 60950.
- Proficiency in developing firmware for power electronics systems.
- Familiarity with FEA tools for thermal and structural analysis.
