The New York Times is looking for a journalist to join our Washington Bureau as a correspondent covering the Department of Justice, cybersecurity and related national security and law enforcement issues.
Cybersecurity is a complex and compelling issue confronting the United States and other nations and requires fluency in technology as well as sourcing in the business world, law enforcement and national security. This is a high-profile, demanding and exciting role at The Times. You should be able to deliver scoops about online espionage and influence campaigns, encryption and hacking, but also be able to write stories exploring and explaining the impact of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in law enforcement and what it tells us about government policy and society.
We want someone who can dive into this sprawling area of coverage that touches on national security and intelligence and build source relationships at all levels. We'd also like someone who understands the information needs of our audiences, who works well with others in a collaborative bureau and who has a proven track record of breaking news, writing revelatory investigative and enterprise stories and explaining complex subject matter in a clear and digestible way.
You should have outstanding writing and reporting abilities, as well the ability to work independently, conceiving stories and reporting them thoroughly and accurately. You should be able to produce deep enterprise as well as write breaking news quickly, concisely and clearly under daily deadline pressure in an intensely competitive news environment and be able to expand the journalistic reach of The Times through appearances on our audio and video platforms and use of alternative story forms.
This is an in-office position, based in Washington, D.C., and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. This is a NY Guild role.
Responsibilities:

You will cover live and breaking news, enterprise and investigations in multiple formats.

You will generate coverage ideas, including specific targets or broad themes;

You will deliver clean, fast, accurate and engaging copy at a high level.

You will discover and cultivate news sources and contacts; follow news trends closely.

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

This role reports to the Department of Justice editor in the Washington Bureau.
Basic Qualifications:
-
5+ years of beat reporting and writing experience;
-
Experience juggling breaking news, smart analysis and enterprise in multiple formats;

Experience or openness to contributing to video and audio.

Commitment to The New York Times’s strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues.

A willingness to collaborate and the ability to partner with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$124,979.94 - $170,000 USD
