Director of Mexico Northern Border Customs Operations

About the Role
The Director of Customs Operations is responsible for the day-to-day operations and growth of cross-border customs activities for the Mexico northern border points of entry. Based in Nuevo Laredo, the Director will develop operational plans for each border that promote long-term success and growth, collaborating closely with the warehousing teams, account management and other Center of Excellence leaders to develop best practices.

What the Candidate Will Do

● Border Operations Management: Oversee and optimize daily customs operations across all northern border points of entry, ensuring efficient customs clearance processes with a primary focus on Nuevo Laredo as the high-volume port of entry.

● Warehouse coordination: Work closely with warehouse leadership teams to ensure seamless communication and drive consistent operations between the warehousing and customs functions.

● Operational Excellence: Monitor day-to-day operational systems, cross-border workflows, and customs brokerage performance, recommending and implementing solutions for continuous improvement.

● Customer Support & Retention: Oversee customer onboarding, support, and retention processes related to cross-border logistics, enhancing service delivery to provide maximum transparency and reliability.

● Policy & Process Implementation: Create and implement new operational policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and internal compliance controls that improve cross-border service, reduce border dwell times, and generate efficiencies.

● Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong strategic relationships with customers, carriers, customs partners, Mexican customs authorities (ANAM/SAT), and port officials.

● Data-Driven Performance: Analyze and interpret key data metrics, compliance KPIs, and operational dashboards to evaluate employee and vendor performance, monitoring different departmental productivity levels and executing individual performance reviews.

Basic Qualifications

● Language Proficiency: Bilingual conversational and professional fluency in both English and Spanish (EN/SP).

● Leadership: Strong leadership and team management abilities with a proven track record of leading operational teams in a fast-paced environment.

● Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.

● Financial Acumen: Proven ability to manage operations finances, department budgets, and cost-allocation strategies.

● Industry Expertise: Certified Customs Broker as well as in-depth knowledge of diverse business and logistics functions, including a deep understanding of Mexican customs law (Ley Aduanera), US-Mexico cross-border regulations, and international trade compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

● Process Design: Proven ability to design, build, and scale operational customs processes from the ground up.

● Regulatory Compliance: Strong understanding of industry regulations, customs guidelines, CTPAT, OEA, and other international security and compliance frameworks.

● Technical Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office and various types of software, such as customer relationship management (CRM), customs management systems, and data analysis software.
