Backend SDET (Java, Playwright, API Testing)

Why this role matters:

As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET IV), you will be a technical lead driving quality, reliability, and testability across the Vonage platform. You’ll partner closely with Engineering, Product, and Architecture teams to proactively prevent defects and ensure the scalability, security, and resilience of our high-traffic conversational commerce and messaging systems.

You will bridge development and quality by owning the quality infrastructure, building scalable, automated testing frameworks, and integrating quality deeply into the CI/CD pipeline. Your work will directly impact the stability and performance of mission-critical systems operating at a global scale, enabling fast, confident releases into production.

Your key responsibilities:

• Drive quality, automation, and reliability for high-scale, distributed, event-driven systems.
• Lead architecture and design reviews, ensuring testability, observability, and verification for complex microservices and async workflows.
• Design and evolve scalable, self-healing test automation frameworks for microservices, APIs, and event-driven pipelines.
• Own quality infrastructure and CI/CD test pipelines, ensuring fast feedback, stable environments, and production-like testing.
• Lead shift-left practices, chaos engineering, and proactive testing to prevent customer-impacting failures.
• You will be responsible for Automated Test Case Creation, Test Planning, Test Development, and Test Execution
• Drive performance, load, scalability, failover, and resilience testing across cloud platforms (GCP/AWS).
• Mentor engineers, influence engineering standards, and partner closely with Product, Engineering, and SRE teams.

What you'll bring

• 8+ years of experience in test automation and quality engineering for large-scale systems.
• Proven ability to design and build enterprise-grade test frameworks from scratch.
• Strong hands-on expertise in Java, with working knowledge of Python or Go.
• Strong knowledge of Playwright framework
• Deep experience testing microservices and event-driven architectures (Pub/Sub, Kafka, Cloud Tasks).
• Strong understanding of cloud-native systems on GCP or AWS, including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience testing REST APIs, async workflows, and distributed systems at scale.
• Solid skills in debugging, observability, and CI/CD-based test execution.

Experience we consider a plus:

• Expertise in Chaos Engineering, load, and high-scale performance testing.
• Experience with CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Cloud Build).
• Familiarity with commerce systems, payments, and transaction workflows.
• Experience with contract testing (Pact), Kafka, or messaging platforms.
