
Mechanical Project Engineer

Project Engineer, Mechanical Engineering is a is mid to senior-level position in Wight & Company’s MEP Engineering group. We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled lead engineer with 8 to 12 years of experience to act as responsible charge for various projects within our portfolio. The position will work closely with senior engineers and other team members to deliver high-quality projects that meet client goals and adhere to the firm’s standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in HVAC engineering principles, a passion for technical design, critical thinking skills and a keen interest in integrated design and delivery processes. This position requires understanding of all project phases including schematic design, design development, construction documents and construction contract administration.
Technical Responsibilities:
- Perform and/or guide junior engineers in mechanical engineering analysis, design, selection and calculations for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for private and public sector building applications with guidance of a senior engineer.
- Ensure conformance of design with applicable building codes and project sustainability goals.
- Participation in submittal of documentation for permitting/regulatory review with multiple local agencies and jurisdictions.
- Utilization of TRACE, eQuest and other energy modeling software in conjunction with in-house energy modelers.
- Utilization of Autodesk Revit MEP documentation and modeling software.
Core Responsibilities:
- Participate in the feasibility, conceptual, and early planning of projects through final design, construction and post-occupancy with the guidance of a senior engineer.
- Evaluate system selection based on analysis of multiple design options and constraints.
- Clearly and concisely convey technical solutions and performance objectives while ensuring complete project alignment with client goals, project design, sustainability objectives, schedule, budget, constructability and post-occupancy performance.
- Lead the preparation of design documentation including BIM models, drawings, and specifications under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, including architecture, engineering, sustainability, construction, and other consultants, to support the integrated delivery of projects.
- Conduct research on systems, products, building codes, and sustainable design practices to inform project decisions.
- Perform construction phase and post-occupancy activities including submittal review, construction site observations and commissioning conclusion.
- Participate in cross-discipline career development. Engage in continuous learning opportunities, attend industry events, and participate in internal training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Adapt to various roles within a project and perform at a high level. Proactively accept tasks beyond the primary scope and adjusts to changing priorities to ensure project success, team collaboration, and firm excellence.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from ABET accredited mechanical engineering program. Master of Science (MS) degree from ABET accredited mechanical engineering program a plus.
- Experience: 8 - 12 years of full-time mechanical (HVAC) engineering experience in an engineering firm, with a leadership role in the analysis, design, and documentation for various project typologies and systems.
- Knowledge: IBC, IMC, IECC, ASME & ASHRAE Building Codes and Standards.
- Licensing and Certification: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred. LEED or other sustainable building certification a plus.
- Skills: critical thinking, analytical problem-solving skills, technical expertise, attention to detail, adaptability, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Passion: A genuine interest in integrated design and delivery, with a commitment to growth and development of the firm.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $130,000. Individual pay will be based on several factors including experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant.
