Summer 2025 Legal Intern, Speech, Privacy and Technology Project

The ACLU seeks a Legal Intern in the Speech, Privacy and Technology Project of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.   

The Team:

The Speech, Privacy and Technology Project is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The project is currently litigating cases and conducting other advocacy efforts on a variety of issues, including political protest, freedom of expression online, privacy of electronic information, journalists’ rights, scientific and academic freedom, openness in the courts, privacy rights at the border, and the impact of big data and algorithmic decision-making. 

What You'll Do:

The intern will be responsible for working alongside the team and assisting in all aspects of litigation.  

Your Day to Day: 

  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects
  • Aid in drafting of legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs
  • Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials
  • Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes    

What You’ll Bring: 

The internship is open to students who are in law school who have completed their 1L year by Summer 2025 or are in an LLM program. Interns should possess the following  

  • Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, and racial justice
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact finding
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regard to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflict
  • Demonstrated interest in free speech, privacy, and technology preferred

Internship Logistics:

  • Location: Our internship program offers a limited number of in-person, remote, or hybrid intern positions. This internship can be remote or hybrid from our New York National office.  
  • Time Commitment: This summer internship requires a full-time commitment (35 hours/week). 
  • Internship Duration: Full-time internships span 10 consecutive weeks and begin either May 27 or June 10, 2025. 
  • Stipend: A stipend is available for those students who do not receive course credit and are lawfully authorized to work. Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of ACLU’s stipend amount for that term, if applicable. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit. Below is the stipend breakdown: 
  • $24/hour for graduate and law students or equivalent experience.  

Priority Application Deadline: December 6, 2024. 

While there is a priority deadline, our project is committed to review all applications on a rolling basis until the closing of posting.
