API Excellence Team

This team is central to that vision.

 

What you'll do

As an Engineering Manager in the API Excellence team, you will play a role in solving one of Adyen’s most significant strategic challenges by shaping the future of our external API ecosystem. Helping to define our company-wide API strategy and technical direction from the ground up. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to define and deliver the core tooling, processes, and guidelines that internal teams will use to deliver a best-in-class API experience for our merchants, focusing on enhancing the consistency and quality of existing and new APIs.
  • Effectively manage stakeholders throughout the company. This includes advocating for the correct implementation of our processes and guidelines to ensure continuous improvement of our APIs.
  • Lead hands-on by actively coding, participating in technical discussions, code reviews, and system design to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Establish feedback mechanisms on tooling, processes, and guidelines, and strategically surfacing dilemmas and opportunities to Senior Leadership and relevant stakeholders across the whole company.
  • Foster an inspiring and inclusive team culture of ownership, autonomy, collaboration, accountability and open communication/feedback.

 

Who you are

  • You have 3+ years of experience leading engineering teams and delivering impactful, scalable solutions.
  • You possess a strong grasp of current API frameworks, including REST and OpenAPI, and are well-versed in best practices for API security and user experience. Your experience or keen interest extends to designing APIs for AI-assisted integration and AI-native workflows, encompassing fundamental concepts like intuitive error messaging, idempotency, and consistent specifications. You demonstrate a high degree of customer empathy and a passion for developer experience, recognizing the crucial role APIs play in it.
  • You excel at managing both technical and non-technical stakeholders and enthusiastically promote your products internally and externally.
  • You are hands-on and collaborative, engaging deeply together with your team’s work while fostering a supportive and learning-driven environment.  
  • Reliability and scalability are priorities for you, and you have experience working with critical, high-load, distributed systems.
  • You set a high bar and ensure your team delivers high-quality, maintainable code and solutions that scale.  
  • You are a strong mentor and coach, helping your team grow while maintaining high performance and accountability.  
  • You have a growth mindset, constantly learning and adopting new practices to stay ahead of industry trends.
  • Experience building developer tools, SDKs, API platforms or building and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines and quality gates is a plus.
