Software Engineer III, Messaging Events

Warsaw, Poland

WHAT IS BOX?

Box is the world’s leading Content Cloud. We are trusted by more than 115K organizations around the world today, including nearly 70% of the Fortune 500 and leaders across deeply regulated industries (such as AstraZeneca, JLL, and Nationwide), to protect their data, fuel collaboration, and power critical workflows with secure, enterprise AI.

By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It’s the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.

Founded in 2005, Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, and we have offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

WHY BOX NEEDS YOU?

The Messaging Platform team provides the foundational infrastructure supporting many core Box products (like our public Events API, Box Drive, and Box Canvas) and features, such as delivering notifications to our web app and connected clients. Our platform reliably handles hundreds of thousands of requests and processes millions of events per second.

Recently, we completed a major migration of the user Events API — accounting for about 25% of Box's peak site traffic — from the legacy Monolith to a microservices architecture. This significant project not only achieved substantial cost savings but also critically validated the scalability of Box's core microservices ecosystem.

With our core messaging infrastructure now cloud-native on Google Cloud Platform, our team is focused on designing and building the next-generation architecture for messaging applications. We are also planning future migrations and improving infrastructure and developer efficiency. Currently, in the early development stages for these new services, we are actively identifying new use cases across Box that our platform can support. This role provides the opportunity to collaborate with teams from ideation through delivery, directly shaping our team's roadmap and the future of messaging at Box.

WHAT YOU'LL DO?

  • Design and implement scalable services with a focus on reliability, observability, operability and efficiency.
  • Work with cutting-edge technologies including Kubernetes, Pub/Sub, Bigtable, and Istio.
  • Make a significant impact on the platform's evolution by shaping its vision and defining feature roadmaps.
  • Enhance engineering processes, principles, and culture within the team and across Box, by championing a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and blameless retrospection.
  • Provide guidance to client engineering teams on the optimal use of our messaging interfaces.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
  • Proven track record of building services and/or tooling using one or more languages (e.g., Java, Scala).
  • Experience working with message queues and/or streaming data systems (such as Kafka or Pub/Sub).
  • Excellent communication skills, a strong sense of ownership, persistence, and drive.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Service (AWS) or Azure.
  • Experience deploying and operating microservices on Kubernetes.
  • A passion for addressing challenges related to database scale and performance.

Box lives its values, with community and in-person collaboration being a core part of our culture. Boxers are expected to work from their assigned office a minimum of 2 days per week, with a focus on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Your Recruiter will share more about how we work and company culture during the hiring process.
