At Box, we are seeking a talented Senior Backend Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in the development of Box Extract, a key component that will enable businesses to automate data extraction from documents, improve workflows with intelligent metadata extraction and categorization, and enhance compliance and data management efficiency. At Extract, we aim to empower our users to gain deeper insights from their content, automate routine tasks to save time and reduce errors, and ultimately build smarter, more scalable workflows.
As part of this team, your mission will be to ensure that the metadata extractor is designed with the best architecture and security standards in mind. Your focus will be on ensuring that the system is flexible enough to guarantee seamless integration of its capabilities into the Box platform, complementing existing tools for secure collaboration, content management, and workflow automation.

What you'll do:
- Lead design and implementation efforts for the components of our app, from the ground up
- Collaborate with partner teams and domain architects on system design and services integration, with a focus on reliability, observability, operability and efficiency
- Collaborate with Core Platform teams
- Collaborate with other engineers and contribute to team growth and development
- Strengthen engineering processes, principles, and culture within the team and across Box, by championing a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and blameless retrospection
- Be involved in defining the vision and assembling feature roadmaps
- Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise.

Who you are:

You have 6+ years of professional software development experience

You are proficient in Java and have familiarity with Spring framework.

Nice to have:

Experience with php and javascript for server-side

Basic knowledge in AI/ML, programming skills in Python

You have experience deploying and operating microservices in a cloud environment

You have strong understanding of common algorithms, data structures and code design principles

You are a technical expert and provide guidance to your team on best practices, coding standards, and complex technical issues

You have experience in implementing monitoring, logging, and metrics tools to ensure system health and performance

You have familiarity with relational databases (e.g., MySQL). You also have Understanding of schema design and query optimization. Nice to have: familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., Bigtable).

You have familiarity in DevOps practices, including setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

You have a strong sense of ownership, persistence and drive and your English language skills are excellent. You excel at collaborating with your team, as well as with teams across the company and key stakeholders.
