Job Summary:
Compliance Management International is seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Health and Safety Specialist with 1–5 years of experience in general industry environments to support our chemical manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will help develop, implement, and monitor safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company policies, with a strong emphasis on chemical safety, hazard communication, and industrial hygiene.
Essential Duties:
- Leads in the development and implementation of Laboratory site-specific Health, Safety, Environmental procedures that conform to corporate Company requirements.
- Conduct site self-audits to ensure Lab personnel are complying with EHS.
- Leads and/or participate in the investigation of incidents, identifying root causes, and assists in initial report preparation. Prepares a timely final report of findings with recommendations for corrective actions
- Assist and lead in conducting risk assessments including Job Safety Analysis and other assessments as needed.
- Conduct regular EHS audits, inspections, and assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct PPE assessments and assist in selection of PPE.
- Work closely with all members of the site management team, including the Chemical Hygiene Officer, and the Center of Excellence – EHS team.
- Track internal and external EHS training for assigned work groups and ensure that refresher training is scheduled prior to expiration dates. Attend waste and DOT training to sign waste manifests.
- Attain a level of knowledge in all EHS databases to be the system expert that supports other departments.
- Ensure all events are properly and accurately captured and categorized in Intelex.
- Generates reports and other data as requested.
- Educate Company employees in complying with Company EHS policies and procedures.
- Verify that all field employees understand and comply with all regulatory requirements and Company EHS practices through Lab visits and auditing protocols.
- Verify compliance regarding inventory, storage, handling, and transportation of hazardous materials, chemicals, and waste at assigned locations.
- Manage and inspect hazardous and non-hazardous waste storage and disposal for assigned locations. Maintain associated recordkeeping.
- Manage HAZCOM programs and site-specific Safety Data Sheets at assigned locations.
- Manage respiratory protection programs at assigned locations and ensure employees are trained and fit tested for assigned respiratory protection equipment.
- Maintain a close working relationship with all Company personnel to verify the implementation and compliance with standard operating guidelines.
- Make and implement recommendations and improvements to EHS, Lab operations, and logistical effectiveness.
- Assist and mentor field supervisory personnel with incident investigations, determining root causes, and preparing detailed and accurate root-cause analysis reports.
- Conduct training of field personnel on proper safety techniques including JSEA completion, incident reporting, and other company safety programs
- Actively promote and participate in Company EHS programs.
- Provide advice and guidance to Company supervisors and/or customer representatives to establish a safe working environment for employees and customers.
- Lead by example to develop employee knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for conducting safe operations.
- Assist with Emergency Action Plan emergency drills.
- Other duties as requested and required.
Requirements:
- EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year experience in equivalent role, 2+ years of field experience or supporting research laboratories is preferred. Management of waste programs is preferred.
- LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Driver’s License
- TRAVEL: None required.
- OTHER:
- Submit to and satisfactorily complete pre-employment background, medical, alcohol, and drug screening.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to walk, stand, or climb ladders/stairs for extended periods within an industrial plant environment.
- Must be able to wear required PPE including respirators, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally.
- Work in both indoor and outdoor conditions, including temperature variations and exposure to dust, fumes, and chemical substances.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations, including alarms, spill response, and evacuation procedures.
Work Environment:
This position is based at a chemical manufacturing facility. The role requires routine presence in production areas, laboratories, and storage locations with exposure to potentially hazardous materials. Strict adherence to site safety protocols is mandatory.
