The Systems and Programming Research team at Google DeepMind conducts foundational systems research in support of ground-breaking AI research, such as AlphaFold, AlphaProof, and AlphaEvolve, as well as the next generation of products across Google’s diverse product lines, scaling from the phone to the data center.

We work day-to-day with research and product teams across Google.  Our research on computer architecture, compilers, distributed systems, and more, underpins critical systems such as Gemini.  We publish research on machine learning, programming languages, computer architecture, and operating systems.

Computer systems research is the foundation on which Google was built and much of today’s technology rests, including the revolution in AI.  Operating at hyper scale requires innovations across the stack. We are a group of researchers and engineers who conduct world-leading research in areas spanning from hardware to the applications of ML, and many areas in between including computer architecture, compilers, and distributed systems.  

 

The role

The Systems and Programming Research team is seeking a Research Scientist to help us advance foundational systems research.  The successful candidate will have a strong record of impactful research in computer systems and a demonstrated ability to move with agility across systems and across problem domains.  You will work with diverse teams across Google, some working directly on existing and emerging products, others developing next generation technologies.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct research on computer systems, including compilers, computer architecture, ML efficiency and ML applications.
  • Develop innovative solutions to diverse problems in the above domains.
  • Evaluate the performance of diverse systems, developing the necessary methodologies where necessary.
  • Work with teams across Google, including those developing products and those supporting existing systems.
  • Work closely with others within the Systems and Programming Research team on a wide range of problems.

 

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind Australia, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • PhD in Computer Systems, Computer Architecture, or Programming Languages.
  • A proven track record of research impact, evidenced through published work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse state of the art tools such as modern compilers, performance analysis tools and operating systems.
  • Demonstrated intellectual agility, evidenced by work on diverse problems and different teams.
  • Proven experience working in industry, working on projects from proof-of-concept through to implementation, applying experimental ideas to applied problems.
  • A real passion for solving high-impact problems!
