An overview of this role
We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel, Litigation to manage a diverse portfolio of litigation matters. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and outside counsel to develop and execute litigation strategies and deliver practical legal guidance that aligns with our business objectives.
The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, solid judgment, and an ability to dive into and take ownership of a matter. This role will work on and assist with all stages of litigation including pre-dispute engagement, initial case assessment, pleadings, factual investigation, discovery, motions, mediation, trial, appeal, and settlement.
What You’ll Do
- Draft and review pleadings, discovery responses, motions, and briefs; prepare and defend company witnesses for depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Partner with team members and stakeholders across GitLab to assess litigation risks and develop strategic approaches to dispute resolution.
- Develop and implement litigation holds and manage document collection and production.
- Manage outside counsel to ensure cost-effective and high-quality representation while within the litigation budget.
- Monitor and analyze changes in the law and legal risks; propose creative and effective solutions to address those risks.
- Develop and implement litigation avoidance best practices.
- Advise on, draft, maintain and review templates and policies.
- Oversee and improve internal processes and tools related to litigation.
What You’ll Bring
- 6+ years’ legal experience.
- JD/LLB or local law degree equivalent and admission to state bar or analogous governing body.
- Broad litigation experience and a proven track record of managing complex litigation, with bonus points for substantively managing patent litigation and/or securities matters.
- Ability to work with technical teams and translate technical concepts for legal purposes.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface effectively with all business functions throughout the organization and build strong relationships.
- Proactive, dynamic, and result driven self starter with strong attention to detail.
- Strong project management skills and ability to independently handle multiple matters simultaneously
- Familiarity working across the globe, to support multiple time zones and cultures, and previous experience in a remote work environment would be advantageous.

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of listed locations only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.

$100,800 - $216,000 USD
