Principal Software Development Engineer - Marketplaces Merchant Platform
Location: Mountain View, CA (5 days/week in office) [relocation if needed]
ID.me is transitioning to a platform-first approach, building scalable APIs and data-driven services that power our eCommerce marketplace, developer ecosystem, and partner integrations. As a Principal Software Development Engineer on the Marketplaces Platform team, you will play a key role in designing and maintaining high-performance private and public APIs that drive revenue, support merchants, and protect users from fraud.
This team will decompose the monolithic ID.me Shop into modular, service-oriented APIs, enabling faster innovation, improved developer experience, and seamless partner integrations. Our goal is to set a new standard for API quality, documentation, and service interfaces, ensuring clear contextual boundaries across teams for independent development and better communication.
This role is ideal for an API-first engineer who thrives on platform thinking—building data products without a UI that empower products and external developers.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and build foundational components for a merchant-facing commerce engine, including checkout, order orchestration, recurring billing, and payment processing.
Design and implement secure and scalable APIs for merchant integration and commerce experiences. - Lead service modularization and infrastructure evolution with a focus on platform extensibility and trust-first design.
- Apply double-entry bookkeeping, idempotent processing, and PCI/SOX compliant service architectures.
- Guide forward-compatible data modeling and storage abstraction strategies across SQL and distributed databases.
- Partner with infra and product teams to ensure early MVPs deliver immediate value while aligning with long-term scalability.
- Evaluate, propose, and implement modern workflows, e.g., Temporal for orchestration and improved observability.
- Mentor senior engineers, lead design reviews, and raise the bar on developer experience and code quality.
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of backend software development experience with deep expertise in payments, ecommerce, or transaction systems.
- 8+ years of experience in API design, data modeling, and distributed system patterns.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Track record of transforming legacy systems into modern, scalable service-oriented architectures.
- Proven success building checkout flows, subscriptions, catalogs, and secure transaction services at scale.
- Expertise in Java, Go, Kafka, Postgres, and cloud-native architectures (AWS or GCP).
- Experience designing active-active architectures and systems with strong consistency and auditability.
- Knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks: PCI, SOX, OFAC.
- Demonstrated ability to ship MVPs rapidly while building towards long-term extensibility.
- Experience with developer-first products and API-first platforms.
- Background in eCommerce or financial tech with multi-region deployments.
- Experience contributing to or maintaining core infrastructure or platform teams.
