Finance Lead

New York, New York, United States

FULL-TIME | NYC (IN-PERSON)

About Moment

Moment is building the first operating system for fixed income, the largest financial market in the world valued at $150T+ globally. We work with the largest financial institutions to bring all of their fixed income operations into a single platform. Founded by former quants at Citadel Securities and Jane Street, Moment serves global financial institutions with over $3.5T in assets after publicly launching in 2024.

The fixed income market is undergoing rapid transformation:
  • Electronic trading has skyrocketed, with corporate bond electronic volumes growing 10x over the last decade
  • Rising rates - from near zero to roughly 5% - have sparked a surge in demand
  • Financial institutions are increasingly partnering with fintechs to modernize legacy infrastructure
  • AI advances are enabling workflow automation that was once thought impossible
Despite the market’s scale, most workflows remain incredibly manual: traders juggle multiple screens, portfolio managers exchange sprawling spreadsheets, and critical coordination still happens by phone or chat. Moment is unlocking a new automation paradigm for the industry by unifying these workflows into one system.

We're backed by world class investors including Index, A16Z, and Lightspeed, and have raised $56M in funding. We recently raised a $36M Series B by Index. You can read Bloomberg's coverage of it here and the memo Index wrote on why they invested.

The Role

We’re looking for an exceptional Finance Lead to be our first dedicated finance hire to build out and own our finance function. This is a hands-on role for someone gritty, independent, and highly competent in core finance and accounting. You’ll ensure our financial house is in order: everything from budgeting and bookkeeping to payroll and compliance. If you thrive in startup environments, love rolling up your sleeves, and have the expertise to build a finance function in a regulated fintech setting, this role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A): Lead the company’s budgeting and forecasting process. Manage cash flow and runway planning, maintain our operating model, and prepare financial reports for the leadership team and investors. You will also better standardize our key performance metrics to ensure our reporting is transparent, consistent, and reflective of our true performance.
  • Accounting & Bookkeeping: Oversee all accounting operations. Manage the monthly close process, ensure accurate financial statements, and handle accounts payable/receivable and billing. Maintain our accounting systems (we use QuickBooks) and implement best practices for general ledger management. Develop a scalable and customer-friendly billing system to support growth and minimize any billing issues.
  • Payroll: Run our payroll process end-to-end. This includes processing salaries, commissions, and reimbursements, and ensuring all payroll taxes and withholdings are correctly handled. Guarantee compliance with state and federal payroll requirements and that employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Tax & Compliance: Manage all tax filings and compliance obligations. This includes sales tax, 1099 filings for contractors, franchise/state business taxes, and coordinating with external tax advisors on annual income tax preparation. Support any financial audits and ensure we are audit-ready with proper documentation.
  • Vendor Management: Oversee external finance-related service providers. This means managing relationships with third-party bookkeepers, auditors, tax preparers, and bankers. You’ll supervise their work, ensure deliverables are met on time (e.g. monthly books, annual financial statements), and integrate their output into our operations. Over time, you will evaluate what functions to bring in-house and on what timing as the company grows (with the goal of internalizing the function entirely and reducing reliance on outside vendors).
  • Financial Operations & Tools: Implement and manage the day-to-day tools and processes that keep our finance function running smoothly. We use modern finance tools like Ramp (expenses/corporate cards) and Sequence (billing/finance operations) – your familiarity with these or similar platforms will help streamline expense management, billings, and reporting workflows.
  • Broker-Dealer FinOps: Serve as the point of contact for our outsourced consultant to start and eventually help guide / plan our decision to bring this work in-house.  The consultant ensures that the broker dealer is in compliance with regulatory capital requirements, monitors that the BD is not taking excessive financial risk, calculates the haircuts and charges to be applied to capital, does the monthly and quarterly financial filings with the SEC and SIPC, prepares financial statement footnotes for the annual audit and is available to discuss the BD's financial condition with the SEC and FINRA. We expect you to help oversee this work.
  • Process Ownership & Scalability: Create detailed SOPs for all finance functions to support future team growth.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience & Expertise: 5–9 years of progressive experience in accounting/finance. You’ve built a strong foundation, ideally starting in Big 4 public accounting or audit, and later building / scaling finance at one or two early-stage startups. You’re comfortable being the go-to finance person in a high-growth environment.
  • Accounting Chops: Deep knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting. Ideally you’re a CPA, and you’re fluent in GAAP, ledgers, and how to close books accurately. Hands-on experience with bookkeeping and financial statements is a must.
  • Operational Prowess: Proven ability to set up and refine finance operations and processes. You’ve managed budgets, performed variance analysis, run payroll, handled AP/AR, and maybe even dealt with regulatory filings before. You aren’t afraid to get into the weeds to ensure everything reconciles and ticks and ties.
  • Tool Proficiency: Excel / G-Sheets jedi. Familiarity with finance and accounting tools. Experience with QuickBooks (or a similar accounting system) is required. Experience with Ramp (or other expense management/corporate card tools) and Sequence (or billing/financial ops platforms) is a strong plus. You leverage software to automate tedious tasks and improve accuracy.
  • Independent & Proactive: You are a self-starter who can operate with minimal guidance. Given that this is a standalone role, you take initiative, troubleshoot issues on your own, and seek out answers or resources when needed. Ownership is in your DNA – when a task is yours, it gets done right.
  • Grit & Adaptability: You thrive in a startup environment where things change quickly. You’re gritty – willing to roll up your sleeves and work through challenges. Whether it’s untangling an account reconciliation or digging into a new compliance requirement, you persist until it’s resolved. You handle pressure and tight deadlines (like regulatory filing cutoffs) with a cool head and a can-do attitude.
  • Detail-Oriented & Organized: You sweat the details, especially in finance where accuracy matters. You have systems to keep track of deadlines (tax filings, reporting) and you double-check work to avoid errors. Nothing slips through the cracks on your watch – if a number is off, you will catch it.
  • Strong Communicator: You can clearly explain financial matters to both finance and non-finance people. You’ll be working with our founders, department heads, external parties (vendors, auditors), and investors so you need to communicate status, issues, and ideas effectively. You’re comfortable presenting a snapshot of the company’s financial health or drafting a brief for the board.
  • Integrity and Trust: You will handle sensitive financial information, so you must operate with the highest level of integrity and professionalism. The team trusts you with the company’s finances and confidential data. You always do the right thing and uphold ethical standards, ensuring compliance and honesty in all financial reporting.

Compensation & Benefits

For this role, the salary range is $170,000-$225,000. Actual compensation will vary based on skills, experience, and interview performance.

In addition to a competitive salary and equity package, we provide every employee with:

  • Grow into the leader you aspire to be. At a fast-growing company in an expanding industry, you can enjoy career growth.
  • Comprehensive wellness package, providing top-notch health, dental, and vision coverage with 100% company reimbursement for most plans.
  • Competitive compensation, top-notch gym stipends ($150), and equity into the company.
  • Flexible PTO policy that people actually use — on average, people take three weeks off per year.
  • 401k with employer match (4%) to help you save for your future.
  • Paid lunches in the office, every day through Uber Eats and a free UberOne membership ($25/meal).
